It was a dick move by Votto. And he owned it and made amends with the guy. Thus the shoutout.

With that said, I still do not understand how you can be at the game and be a fan of the team and not get out of the way so your team has a better chance at catching the ball.

Why don't the Reds trade Votto? He's a perennial 6+ WAR player when healthy, and would be a coveted asset for MANY teams with aspirations of a deep playoff run.

Are they "maximum value" dead-enders like the Sox, not realizing that his "value" to your team is negligible if it results in no better than an LDS appearance every 5 years?

I think he makes too much money for the type of hitter he is. He's a really good player. And there's nothing wrong with all those walks. But ultimately someone has to drive them in. There just aren't many teams that can afford to pay Walking Pete $22 million a year when they also have to pay something similar to the guy(s) that will drive him in. But he seems like a luxury that a team like the Yankees or Mets could afford.

He's slugging .500 right now, last year he slugged .541.

I know. I didn't say he lacked power. But that's a percentage. He hasn't driven in 100 runs in many seasons and that isn't for lack of opportunity. It's because he walks so much. Again, I'm not saying walks are bad for an offense. I'm saying it's likely teams don't want to pay a guy $22 million to walk 110 times and drive in 75 runs. Maybe you think it's worth that money. Maybe it even is. But baseball moves slowly and even in this age of stats I'd guess people find his money high for a two hole hitter.

Votto has a slash line with RISP of .306/.460/.611 this season across 100 PA's, and for his career he's .327/.476/.572. League average with RISP this year is .253/.338/.407

In the 4 seasons not shortened by injury in which he has failed to hit 100 RBI, Votto has had exactly two full-time teammates (100 games or more) that OBP'd above .350: Adam Dunn and Shin-Soo Choo. Choo was the only one to bat in front of Votto.

I really don't know what more you want from the guy besides an arbitrary watermark of a statistic whose prerequisites Votto has absolutely no control over. I highly doubt MLB teams aren't moving to acquire Joey Votto because he doesn't "generate" enough RBI's, despite clearly performing well above league average when RBI's are possible.

He's often walking when RBI are available. Again, I'm not suggesting that's a bad thing. I'm simply stating that in spite of the statistics revolution in baseball there is likely going to be resistance to paying the type of money Votto is getting to a guy who is not seen as a "run producer". If he isn't driving them in, you're relying on another guy to do so. And yeah, I know that theoretically, Eddie Gaedel might be the greatest player ever to come to bat.

I had a discussion with a Cub fan friend who is unhappy with Bryant hitting in the two-hole. Just for the sake of argument, I took the SABRmetric viewpoint that batting order is inconsequential based on any type of modeling and that the "best" batting order is likely just highest OPS in descending order. But again, I realize that is all theoretical and batters are actual human beings carrying around hundreds of years worth of baseball "common knowledge" and often coached by busted down old ex-players that don't make much money for doing the job. How often do you hear a batter talking about the different "approach" he takes when batting leadoff as opposed to second as opposed to cleanup? All the modeling is based on Kris Bryant simply being Kris Bryant rather than making adjustments based upon what he believes is expected of him when hitting in various positions.

I was going to wait until the end of the season to determine if my article—headlined “Joey Votto Sucks Right Now And The Reds Will Have To Pay Him Forever”—stood up, but Votto’s been on such a tear that I have to call the race. His slash line is now .293/.425/.500. He went 4-for-4 with a walk and one RBI in last night’s game as Cincinnati took a big dump on the St. Louis Cardinals. He had an absolutely ridiculous July, batting .413/.549/.627 and recording at least one hit in 19 of 23 games that month. He’s currently on a 16-game hitting streak. Joey Votto is good and strong.

Votto has a full no-trade clause and has stated numerous times that he will never approve a trade out of Cincinnati. That is why they don't/can't trade him.

he's had some pretty major anxiety issues. Perhaps playing for a non-contender helps him stay sane.

Yes, the fan should have known to get out of the way, but the video clearly shows Votto missed a pretty easy catch. At least Votto was cool and owned up to being an ass.

The Cubs could.

They are paying Jason Belanger 23 million a year.
