We always have apples.

When I was climbing mountains in Afghanistan all we had on our minds were the apples.

I'll still think those "surprise" NFL reunions are more patronizing.

I wouldn't say that being unfamiliar with Mr. Show makes one ignorant.

Thank you, America, and thank you, Proud Heroes!

The ones at the police station were at half staff this morning which seems like the norm.

Not sure how they determine how long to lower it.

Was walking out of the store and saw an older guy with a Vietnam vet hat on and I stopped and said thank you and shook his hand. I think I freaked him out

My grandfather was a part of D Day. Fucking miracle I'm still here. He only talked about it briefly from time to time. When he and my grandma died we were cleaning up their stuff and my grandma had kept all his letters he sent home to her. They are... poetic and beautiful. Considering he was a standard old school no nonsense guy, it's crazy to see that side of him, especially seeing as he was a kid an ocean away killing Nazis. Now kids send dick pics and can't string a sentence together.

Thanks to all the veterans here. Well done.

My Dad was in Korea. He never talked about it until I was an adult. It made me think it wasn't a big deal as I grew up but then, after a few stories, it sounded quite terrifying to live through. The uncertainty of what they knew at the time.

Thanks all.

I'm pretty sure Hussra was in the military.

Serious question: Does the term "veteran" refer to anyone who served or does it specifically denote someone who served in a war zone?

Anyone who served. Serving in a war zone is a combat vet.

Thank you.

Anyway, I guess in modern times just about anywhere might be considered a war zone.

I saw a commercial today that I thought was quite interesting. It was a computer screen showing some old MS-DOS prompts while a sinister voice talked about how they were going to ruin some such thing and then it cut to 2 Army people sitting in front of their computers high-fiving each other for stopping the transmission.

Cut to - Join the Army slide.

I was thinking of the old Be All You Can Be Army commercials from when I grew up of people basically kicking ass and now they promote computer defense skills. I felt very old.

The Army of One commercials worked on me. I was a bored 21 year old who knew I didn't want to go back to college yet, and I saw enough of them and figured it looked pretty badass enough to try out.

Senior year of HS, I set up an appt with a navy recruiter. I wanted to be a dentist so I figured free school, just give them a decade or so of my life. Plus I'd be an officer. When my dad found out he flipped his shit. If I could do it all over again, I'd probably tell my dad to shove it up his ass.

So your life is a failed sitcom pilot.

Probably a better life than a successful sitcom pilot.

My dad volunteered for WWII at 18.

He was a radio operator and ended up going down in the Pacific while flying a B-29 back from Guam after the war ended. Had about 45 seconds to prepare for the crash.

Half the crew died on impact. My dad resurfaced to the sight of flames/fuel and the sounds of his fellow crew screaming while being burned alive. He tried to swim free of the flames, only to see and hear the same horror. Finally got clear of it and floated for 6 hours before being rescued. He was one of only three that survived from a twelve-man crew.

I was doing gravity bongs at 18.

He clearly had PTSD and survivor's guilt that would affect him the rest of life. Just never was emotionally available to be a father. Hated him while I was a teenager and young adult for it. Only began to grasp the totality once I grew older.
