It's anonymous. All I'm going to say is that there is a lot of money in selling those hamburgers.

I had heard this was coming down a few months ago. I think it's great as I think continued catholic education is key to young people staying with their faith into adulthood and then passing it on to their children.

I have some thoughts about who the donor might be based on who the scholarship fund is named after.

I have not worried about the rich and the poor at the school going ahead. Both seem to be adequately covered. I really worry about the middle class at the school (almost mimicking society). That is a big price tag and while the school covers demonstrated need, demonstrated need is defined differently by different people.

As a Catholic, Catholic education should not be a luxury. We are worried about fewer people in the pews on Sunday and I think closing parish schools and pricing out catholic secondary schools only exacerbates the problem. The best way to get the parents into church is by having their kids in the parish program.

Thank you, Sam! After all the great education we provided good dolphin, he couldn't even spare a dime for an old altar boy.

Wow, that might be enough to pay off 2-3 pedo priest lawsuits.

Walsh isn't doing it anonymously. They have their name on a wing of the school. I doubt they would earmark the donation for strictly minority scholarships.

There is someone with a good amount of money on her/his own who married into a billionaire fortune but the billionaire may not care to put his name to catholic donations.

I honestly don't know who it is though. 15 million is a lot but you don't have to be in that billionaire range to make that kind of donation. The possibilities are pretty wide.

Leaders of the prestigious Jesuit Catholic high school announced the donation Tuesday, the “largest single gift” in the school’s history. The donation will be used to fund scholarships for students from “Austin and the more challenged neighborhoods on Chicago’s South and West sides,” the school said in a press release.

The Fr. Donald F. Rowe, S.J. Scholarship Endowment will cover four years of tuition, “transportation, books, retreats, lunch and whatever else students may need to normalize the years at St. Ignatius,” according to a release.

Holy smokes....

Pretty sure that 14,999,999 of it isn't his money.

THIS

Was at a Fenwick hoops game 10 years ago or so watching Jordan's kids play for Loyola.

I turned to a childhood friend and asked him, "Are there any blue collar families left here?" He answered, "No."

I highly doubt that has changed since then.

Tuition for my high school is $8,585, which is about what my yearly tuition was at UIC 25 years ago.

And that's a Catholic High School in the middle of a cornfield with 730 kids.

The cost of private schools is what forces MANY people to game the selective enrollment process in some way.

It's even cheaper Doug if you are participating parish in that Diocese.

There are no Diocesean affiliated Catholic High Schools left in Chicago.

So, it's $7k with a participating parish and $9.4k for non participating. Still, that's crazy.

Yes, sheer insanity.

The Gov't, the Catholic Church, and Disney World are all incredibly efficient at taking your money.

Seems like a lot of money to spend without a reward like a better football team.

The tuition at mine is now $13,170.00. It was $650 my freshman year. It's a different school now though, trying to compete with Fenwick and St. Ignatius. I'm not sure where a kid can go to learn how to repair a toilet or operate a lathe these days.

11% increase per year since I graduated seems excessive.

When you add in all of the other fees you're over $40k for high school after likely paying close to $100k for grade school. No guarantees come with that money.

If you have 1 child these things may be doable. If you have multiple kids you can't even think about it unless you're making NSJ money.

Go to public school. Go to church on Sunday. Put $10k a year into a fund for your kid to use after college when he has the same job he would have had anyways.

Grade schools are cheaper.

Most schools offer discounts for multiple kids.

Financial aid is usually available.

There are no guarantees in life.

I think the multiple-kid discounts are greater in grade school. I think my Benet discount is a whopping $300. :(

"Cheaper" and "discounts" are relative terms.

You are well over six figures if you send your kid to Catholic school K thru 12.

The tuition at private schools is generally cheaper than the public school per student. The main difference I suppose would be that funding for public schools comes out of people's property taxes, so they effectively cannot go out of business. I do believe that private Christian or Catholic education is better than the public school and worth the money if you can afford it.

You are paying not to deal with the problem kids. If you were a behavior problem you got removed from the school. In public school that can not be done unless they bring a weapon to school or seriously harm someone.
