Really? I know there are a lot of strong shortstops out there right now, but I don't see how anyone could say they are better than Jeter, A-Rod, Garciaparra, Vizquel, et al.

One Hall of Famer on that list doesn't make it sound so impressive. At least say Larkin.

How many Hall of Fame shortstops do you think are playing now?

O/U at 2.5 and I may go over with 3.

The White Sox should trade for Starlin Castro to play SS next season.

Lindor, Correa, and Seager look really good. Brandon Crawford has had an excellent career so far. Russell has looked good. Turner and Swanson are just getting started. Xander has put up good offensive numbers. Simmons is today's Vizquel.

Lots of real good talent at the SS position. And you have 3 of the top 4 prospects being SS, too!

Did Addison Russell deserve to start the All-Star Game?

No.

Does that make him overrated?

Absolutely not.

The 23-year-old is already one of the game's elite defensive players, and he's just scratching the surface of his tremendous offensive potential.

His .238 average wasn't anything to write home about, but do you know how many shortstops have posted a 20-homer, 90-RBI season before their age-23 campaign?

Six.

If his huge month of August (.829 OPS, 7 HR, 23 RBI) is any indication, bigger and better things are coming for Russell in 2017.

Given what we know now, it would be unfair to compare this group to the late 1990s class of shortstops that included Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Miguel Tejada, Nomar Garciaparra, and Edgar Renteria. That said, the current class of shortstops around baseball are incredibly impressive and have already done some amazing things early in their careers.

It’s hard to think a shortstop could hit 21 home runs and drive in 95 runs and still be underrated, but that’s pretty much exactly what happened with Cubs shortstop Addison Russell last year. I guess that happens when you’re only the third best player on your own infield. Russell struggled in the postseason, but he hit .238/.321/.417 (97 OPS+) during the 2016 regular season and rates as a stellar defender (+15.4 UZR). Out of everyone in this post, I think Russell will improve the most from 2016 to 2017. He turned just 23 last month.

“According to Statcast™, [Addison] Russell was leading all Major League players with 26 batted balls with an exit velocity of 95 mph or more through Wednesday and was leading the Cubs with an average exit velocity of 92 mph per batted ball.”

What's awesome about Russell is that he has two kids with two different women born around the same time and no one says shit about it.

A true alpha male.

Poor Addison Russell, if only he got more recognition.
