Seriously. How do you commit two errors in one play?

The thing I do not get is how anyone can call him good. You can love him, be thankful for his contributions, even be willing to tolerate him in the field. You cannot objectively call him a good fielder though. Yet some do.

That is not the first time Schwarber has made two errors on the same play this season.

312 is full of shit. I listen to W&S almost daily, and I have never heard Silvy call Schwarber a good defender.

Silvy was adamant about Schwarber being an above average left fielder in April and May.. He hasnt said it since but he he was telling anybody that would listen hes fine out there and there are many worse left fielders in MLB than Schwarber.

seriously. I think his outfield defense is passable and I'm probably the one with the highest opinion of him.

I have not said that at all. I've said he's better than Dunn and Glenallen Hill, the two worst LF's I've ever seen in Wrigley. He's passable, despite last night.

It isn't passable. He has dropped no less than 5 balls this season alone that have hit his glove, and we aren't talking about it 'glanced' off of a fully outstretched glove. He also has allowed runners to advance an extra base, and he has let a couple get past him completely all the way to the wall. He also has had a terrible time throwing to second on close doubles, and he has missed several cutoffs.

Passable might be dropping one easy fly ball per season, and 2-3 bobbles. Passable could also be an outfielder catching all routine fly balls but then having an issue throwing accurately to a base.

I love his fire and passion. I love the anger and how he was just beating himself over it. Like Doc said, I'd put him right back out there today. His defense is bad, no doubt..how can you hate the guy though? He's pure awesome. Definitely I would let him in my fox hole.

that's just not true. He's a LF, not a RF or CF. Earlier in the game he made a great throw to hold a runner to a single. Look, I'm one of the guys that said trade him last year after the WS. But he's on the team, and his bat eventually will contribute in a big way, especially in these 1 or two run games.

It is true. No one designated left field as a place for fielders that cannot catch. The only reason that LF is considered weaker than RF is throwing. More balls are hit to LF than to RF over the course of a season.

Right handed pull hitters usually hit a bomb or a lazy fly out on outfield contact. When they go the other way it's a laser line drive requiring more range. Of course it's the opposite for lefties but there are more righties than lefties so that's also why you stick your bad fielder in left.

anyone who's played OF or IF knows that oppo drives or grounders are more difficult to predict.

edit, bob already said this.

You need a stronger more accurate arm in right..longer tbrow to 3rd base.

In theory all you have to do in LF is keep the ball in front of you and you can hold him to a single.

somebody bust out the Schwarber-in-the fog GIF please.

There may be 3-4 LF in baseball that are worse.

Khris Davis
Benintendi
Kemp
Duvall

Some numbers (taken with a grain of salt, as def metrics are....not quite there) have him as one of the better LF's.

Of the 20 LF who played at least 700 innings...

5th in UZR/150
2nd in ARM rating
10th in range factor

He is passable. His miscues just look worse than most because he's a big plodding fuck.
