I'm thinking corporate may have trained their employees not to do that. She didn't seem to care at all when I didn't say I would do it. She probably secretly judged me though.

I haven't had that happen at Whole Foods. If you bring your own bag they ask if you want to apply the $0.10 credit to your bill or donate it. When you donate it they usually act very appreciative (sometimes overly so considering it's only 10 cents) and tell you which charity it's going to.

A few times they've asked if I wanted to donate to some other charity. I am more annoyed by the Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts selling stuff outside of Jewel than I am by that.

I adopted the "Just Say No" policy. I say no to everything involving a company raising money for charity. I don't care what it is and I don't feel bad about it.

Agreed. I’ll donate to charities of my choice.

The second most ridiculous thing I ever encountered with this sort of thing was at The Card and Party Outlet. The cashier asked if I wanted to make a donation to "help keep babies safe." I asked "Keep them safe from what?" and the kid just stared at me with a blank look on his face until I said "No, I'll just pay for the cards."

The most ridiculous thing I ever encountered with this sort of thing was about 30 years ago at a bank. I had just made a transaction and was leaving when someone collecting for the American Cancer Society (in the bank itself, not outside) or something like that asked for a donation. I said "I'm sorry, not today." and the guy said, in a really snotty tone, "...hope you don't get it." I said "I already had it, you prick."

I hadn't already had it but I gave him a polite answer, there was no reason for him to say that, and I wanted to make him feel bad.

I’m thinking the “coin jars” for charity at 7-11s and the like are donated directly into the owners pocket.

That's what I tell them. Not going to help a company with their advertising. "Casey's helped raise over $250,000 for charity last year".
