I've noticed that Aldi ALWAYS has Jewel(s) beat on the price of milk. Sometimes it's not even close.

Aldi produce is pretty horrendous but we buy just about everything else there. I used to be against it because it looked so ghetto but I actually prefer some of their items. Their generic hostess cupcakes are better than the real thing.

Sort of. They are both owned by German grocery companies that used to be part of the same company. Like Adidas and Puma... same thing happened to Aldi, the brothers split because one wanted to sell cigarettes and one didn't. So it became Aldi Nord and Aldi Sur. Aldi Nord came over to USA and kept their European model as Aldi, Aldi Sur came over and opened up shop as Trader Joe's and went Americanized.

And that is way more than you wanted to know about the history of Aldi.

Their thick-cut bacon is awesome. It’s great around the holidays for interesting appetizers as well.

I now know my go-to guy for Aldi.

So what's the scoop on Kirkland booze? You got anything on that?

I don’t know about Kirkland’s but I can tell you not to buy Irish Cream from Aldi.

Their produce is hit or miss. Onions, potatoes they somehow always seem to fuck up. Their fruit is mostly OK.

Post subject:  Re: aldi

They are remodeling a bunch of their stores and trying to make them yuppier. They want to position the company as a cheap organic alternative to Whole Foods. But one thing you should know is that the milk and eggs prices vary from store to store. I've been to a couple stores that are within 15 minutes of each other and it was $1 difference on the milk and $.75 difference on the eggs.

Aldi has plans to take over the United States because there is a portion of the country where they have yet to open stores. I think people like the store because $20 gets you a decent amount of stuff, whereas $20 at Trader Joe's or Jewel gets you in some cases only 4 or 5 items. Aldi is cheaper than Walmart on store brand products, but you have to watch it because Aldi has some name brand stuff in there that is completely overpriced. People sometimes fall into the "It's Aldi it must be cheap" trap.

From what I've read Kirkland is like Cameron Hughes writ large when it comes to hooch.

A DOZEN EGGS SHOULD COST MORE THAN 36 FUCKING CENTS.

Author:  IkeSouth [ Thu Dec 07, 2017 10:36 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: aldi

That's because it used to be cheap everything.

As a kid, we went there because we were poor. They had weird food and it was lower quality than logli. A lot of it tasted like crap.

But over a decade ago they really went hell bent on food quality. It's pretty remarkable, because I'm starting to favor their food more than anywhere else, cost not even a factor.

But it did drive up prices. I don't think they're cheap anymore, but I never feel ripped off when I get home. (Fuck you pick and save)

Is anyone here old enough to remember when Jewel first started carrying generic products? It was a designated “generic”aisle and all of the products had white labels with black writing (ie Green Beans, Cola, etc.).

Yes.

And their sweetened Iced Tea was awesome.

How about some bacon recipes Zippy?

I don’t really have any bacon recipes other than a recommended method for thick cut bacon.

Foil covered cookie sheet.
350 degree oven.
8-10 slices placed side by side (not touching or they’ll stick together)
Cook for approximately 20 minutes and check when you begin to smell the sweet scent of bacon.
Flip once and return.
Take out when it looks done to your liking.
Place in paper towel in fold of newspaper to catch remaining grease.
Bacon comes out perfect with minimal shrinkage
Added bonus: in winter, put foil and pan in garage and it will solidify quickly for simple disposal.

Zippy, I will do you one better. Take some old bread and cut it up in bite size squares... toss within the bacon grease and salt a little bit. Back in the oven for 7-10 minutes, toss it once while you wait. Best croutons you've ever had. Ever.

I was told that many of the cereals and snacks come from the same facilities as the mainstream brands, simply re-branded. Kinda like that wine thing that Berns live reads for...
