Bear attacks Packers fan in southwest Florida

Associated Press

A man says he was letting his dog outside in Florida when a large black bear attacked him.

Andrew Meunier tells local news outlets that he let his dog out of his home about 11 p.m. Tuesday and spotted the 4-foot bear standing next to him when he stepped outside. He said he struggled to get away and managed to get back through his front door.

A 911 call revealed that Meunier suffered a minor facial laceration from the bear attack. He sought treatment at a local hospital and received 41 stitches.

"I'm just happy to be alive," Meunier said. "It could've been a totally different story."

Meunier, orginally from Milwaukee, appeared on local news wearing a Green Bay Packers shirt.

I wouldn't call that facial laceration minor. Glad he survived, but glad to see the Bear hatred for Packers extends into the wild. Fire and Pashun!

Packer dude down in Naples must've either surprised the black bear or the bear had cubs nearby--from my time hiking the appalachian trail in recent years, Black bears you're supposed to be aggressive toward and they fuck off. The only bears I caught glimpses of whilst hiking the AT were always headed the other way from hikers. Grizzles and other brown bears (cuz who the hell can grok a Grizzly from a run of the mill Brown bear when randomly encountering one in the woods), you're supposed to crater/fetal position it and hope the bear gets tired of whacking/slashing at you with their razor sharp talons.

Quote:
Last fall, when hunters killed far more bears than expected during Florida's first bear hunt in 21 years, the state's top bear expert said that was a sign that there were more bears in the woods than anyone knew.

A study unveiled Thursday backed that up, finding 4,350 bears prowling the woods, or about 60 percent more than the population found by a similar study 14 years ago.

"The good news is that bears are abundant in Florida," said Thomas Eason, top bear expert at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

That's only the adult population, not including cubs. Eason said there could be 1,000 to 2,000 cubs at any time too.

Eason did provide an important caveat: the new population estimate is based on data from before last fall's historic hunt, not after.

Illinois delightfully bear free. Nearby states have several x's the bear pop of FLA:

Quote:
The bears are even establishing new populations, mostly recently in Ohio, where there are an estimated 50-100 bears. Indiana could be next, due to a good breeding habitat and growing numbers of them in adjacent states, including Kentucky and Michigan.Aug 14, 2016

Quote:
Are there any bears in Michigan?
Approximately 15,000 - 19,000 black bears (including cubs) roam the hardwood and conifer forests of northern Michigan. About 90 percent of the bear live in the Upper Peninsula, while the remaining ten percent are mainly found in the northern Lower Peninsula.

map of the distro of the North American Black Bear, not as plentiful in the traditional, non-FLA south as I thought.

Bama, SC and Texas have insane (both in size and character) wild boar populations that maybe keep the black bear pop from gaining footholds in those states in large numbers:. Michigan banned the sport hunting--even on enclosed ranches--of wild hogs in recent years. Cuz if even a few of them break out and aren't hunted down they'll quickly breed like bunnies and take over an area--like asian carp on land.

There are random bears from time to time in Illinois. We had one around here 6-7 years ago but there was some feeling that it was an escaped pet or more likely a drop off. I think there was one filmed up near Galena in recent years too as well as Shawnee national forest sightings. No breeding populations though.

When I trained horses in Central Florida near Sanford and Deland there were yellow warning signs for bear crossings all over. I never saw a bear down there though. I always wanted to.

yep, a couple years ago I was visiting a buddy in Orlando. He lives in Orlando city limits. ONe night I stepped outside to smoke some weed and as I'm standing in the driveway a large black bear comes strolling out from the neighbor's backyard about 15 feet from me. He walked out to the street and at that point I started following him from a distance. He walked the entire block before heading into someone's yard.

So, snakes, alligators, Tampa Bay, spiders, and they also have bears? Why would anyone live there? I'll handle cold weather for a few months.

Also, sink holes. Wife has a friend whose house was on one. As she was going through a divorce I think the fight was who was stuck with the house.
