Wow that was great theater. She berated the chair umpire to the point where he penalized her a full game.

I haven't followed tennis too closely in a long time but it seems the sport needs some new blood on both mens and womens sides.

She didn't even shake the chair ump's hand after she fuckin' lost.
Just had to yell at him one more time about how he owes her an apology.....

can you provide context? she went after the ump after she lost? like a sore loser? or was it because of a call?

The awarded game was on Osaka's serve, so it probably wasn't dispositive of the match. But still the more points the youngster has to earn under the pressure of a Grand Slam final the greater the odds she fucks up and Serena comes back to win. Serena's coach was probably trying to tell her to stop going for a winner on her first serve to avoid double-faulting. Serena double-faulted a lot during the match. Serena's coach fessed up to trying to coach her during the match; but noted that Osaka's coach was doing the same and that all the players get coached during matches--despite it being against the rules.

Skip Bayless with an actual reasonable take. What a world.

Serena is right: Men players get away with far more abusive language to chair umpires and it seems like every player's coach signals from the box without getting called for it. But even without the game penalty, not sure Serena would've survived against sensational Naomi Osaka.

saw all of what peeps posted. ya JBI11s, I agree w/ you. i think there's some bullshit going on here and not from Serena. If she was a man or better yet white male doing the same shit, she would have been celebrated.

the 'tennis crowd' which are basically a bunch of elitist son of a bitches. Probably hasn't changed in 40 years. Got to give Serena credit for shutting her mouth for most of her career and just winning. Can't imagine what it must be like to work and interact w/ these nose up in the air bastards.

today is probably the best thing what's happened to tennis in years. even me who had no interest in tennis and didnt even know the us open was going on got interested in tennis just because of this story.

The coaching call was bullshit but what got her in trouble was that she wouldn’t shut up. Ramos is a pretty long time veteran and he’s never been known to have it out with a player. It wasn’t just that she called him a “thief”, it was the whole “you owe me an apology. Then stop talking to me.”

Besides that, Osaka owned her the entire match. Ramos had nothing to do with that.

Pretty much. Most get the warning or the point penalty on second infraction and they let it go. Gotta let it go because you just can’t risk a game. But they just need to do away with the coaching thing. It’s a silly, unenforceable rule (although this is not first time I’ve seen it).
