In my day to day personal and work life, I'm down to 2 actual people that still think is some overblown, "30,000 people die from the flu every year" thing. That number has gone way down in the last week.....

I'm not sure of the upside of being one of the last holdouts to accepting science and medicine on something like this, but in a strange way...I admire your persistence.

No one here doesn't believe that this is likely very serious. The "holdouts" just haven't seen anything for the data that tells us that crashing the economy and shutting down the entire country is reasonable.

Do those people think multi-billion dollar industries like NFL, NBA, MLB, etc voluntarily elect to lose huge amounts of money based on a common flu?

All of those did some kind of shut down prior to the government stepping in on some major level nationally.

This virus isn't sports, though. You can't just open the paper tomorrow and see how many yards/deaths the virus gained and then determine whether the virus had a good week.

Look at how many cases/deaths have happened in the last 7 days, with on the local and national level. Then listen to the medical/science people about how that rate is going to accelerate over the next week/month/etc. It's staggering. And the whole "old people are gonna die soon anyway" perspective falls into the group of people that I'm talking about. Dismissing those cases and casualties doesn't make them not exist.

I assume you've taken a stats class or two in your life (probably more) - this shit is real. It's not "the flu" - we have known vaccines and timeframes and medicines for that.

It is it's own separate virus. It's highly contagious. It kills some people.

I don't see this as a media issue, but maybe I consume my media differently.

If my media says (for example)
Day 1 - 15 sick, 0 dead
Day 10 - 150 sick, 3 dead
Day 20 - 450 sick, 10 dead
and so on...
and then look at the projections of doctors and scientists...

and so on....and it's known that we are behind the "wave" of infection of other countries on the other side of the world, we can also make statistical projections based on that in addition to our own numbers:

So at this point, pretty much every leader in all of these fields are agreeing this shit is super serious, so much so that they are willing to risk collapse of their particular field:

Government
Financial/Stocks
Medicine
Science
Education
Sports
Travel
etc

And that goes for the world, not just our country.

If this isn't really that big of a deal, who is making that decision? There is nobody left. Nobody with any actual influence is choosing to make their state/nation/world crippled.

Secondly, from a sociological standpoint, its interesting to see what populations will tolerate. Frank posted earlier about who would start shooting when we're locked down. Although it was intended to be a smartass post, it raises an interesting question. We all are doing just what they are asking us to do with nary a question.

Some players made some money. The guys selling just before the crash is the tip of that iceberg. I expect more of those stories to come out. In 6 months we'll hear about plenty of short sellers too.
I know you think its tin foil. But I don't think a lot of global powers really knew what they could get away with until now. You tell me 40 years ago that a flu virus that killed only people who probably would have died from the regular flu would cause global economic shutdowns and I dont think it flies like it does today.
I do not believe that Americans would have tolerated the patriot act 40 years ago. It required a panic.
Today's lockdowns were seeded by 20 years of believing safety trumps liberty.

Now, all that I'm saying.... isnt to say people shouldnt be smart.

But it's much smarter, much more economical, to isolate people that are in at risk demographics than the world population. Why didn't we try that?

Unfortunately that is hindsight. Even for the leaders in all of those fields. That ship has sailed.

But that doesn't change the fact that this virus is real. It's a rapidly growing disease like we haven't seen in most of our grandparents lifetimes, much less ours. I just don't get the whole disbelief.
