I'm going to the north part of ireland next week. I'm expecting it will have returned to beautiful summer days of overcast, 60 degrees with some rain by the time I get there.

I was very surprised when reported on the news that less than 1% of households had a/c over there. Definitely thankful for it, especially when you have weather like we are having this week.

Portland, OR experienced this last summer I think. Temps over 100. My friend had to buy a portable air unit because almost zero apartment buildings have AC.

recall back in the last decade or so when folks were wondering why obesity rates were lower in like France vs Texas hearing or reading a theory that the lack of AC in France had something to do with it.

Or more that folks in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas etc having good AC made them fat. Dunno if it was because not having AC meant your body had to burn calories regulating its temperature or if because if you have good AC in those places you're probably not going outside much 6 months out of the year or if being all hot and sweaty makes food unappetizing.

Its not the AC. Its Americans drinking gallons of high fructose drinks like tea, pop, and juice every week.

I wish thermostats didn't do numbers. People are fixated on numbers more than comfort.

Good point. They may not even realize the number they choose is different for heating season from cooling season.

71 in the summer and 68 in the winter. I like my inside temperature within 3 degrees.

That depends on your house and your equipment.

Not always. It depends on the temperature and humidity.

It’s not the heat. It’s the humility.

Does it really save money to turn your heat down at night? I'm thinking of keeping the house at 68 and turning it down to 63 at around 9 and back up to 68 around 4 so the house is normal by 6 am or so. Would there be any measurable savings or would I just be making us all miserable? I'm cold at 68, it sucks.

darkside... do we agree if a house is designed to retain heat, it's also designed to retain cold? unless they mean most houses in england have southern facing windows but that solution is a drape.

i keep at 68 because i like to have a chance at regulating my heat with a comforter while railing a sewer pipe

but i think the savings largely rely on your homes r value. if its a drafty house, turning down the heat will be miserable and the furnace is still gonna run a lot anyway. tight house you can retain heat better but even then i never saw much more than a 20% swing in the bill. but my results are weird too, because first house was drafty with windows that needed plastic every winter. now its a townhouse with great insulation plus surrounding units that pump heat my way. drafty house could hit $350 some winters. this place is $150 tops.

We had our windows were replaced a few years ago, they were original and being held together by dirt. I've thought about putting that winter plastic stuff over them. I don't think our furnace is strong enough for our house and there is a huge difference between upstairs and downstairs temperature.

We had the Spaulding family household financial year end review this weekend. I think it went poorly and now I'm going to make everyone's life what they call miserable for a few months until we all can't take it anymore. I'm looking to cut costs and I only have control over a few things. I'd have thunk you of all people would understand that! Show me how to cut costs, Noisy!

I keep mine at 62 after 9 pm. It goes up to 69 fifteen minutes before my alarm goes off. It saves money. How much? I don't know.
