Are your kids old enough to be forced to declare emancipation?

It'd be more profitable to sell them.

My wife would murder me if I set the house at those temps. Well, if she would crawl out from under the electric blanket long enough to catch me,

Winter is for clothes. You can leave it at 80 when you're 75.

She makes up for it in the summer when she wants the house AC set at an absurdly warm temp. Growing up we had radiators for heat. I think my folks dropped it to 62 at night at turned it up to 68 when they woke up. Took a long time to warm up. In the summer we didn't have AC so it was hotter than hell I July. I was tougher back then. I'd prefer that cold for sleeping but its not a fight worth fighting . There are times, when it when it super cold out and our heat system struggles a touch she will wear a stocking cap. She hates the cold.

Does it really save money to turn your heat down at night? I'm thinking of keeping the house at 68 and turning it down to 63 at around 9 and back up to 68 around 4 so the house is normal by 6 am or so. Would there be any measurable savings or would I just be making us all miserable? I'm cold at 68, it sucks.

This has a lot to do with what you use to heat your home. Boiler? Don't ever use setbacks. High efficiency furnace? Maybe a 2 or 3 degree setback over more than 8 hours saves a couple bucks. 80% furnace? Just keep a 1 or 2 degree setback.
But honestly man, my answer is be as comfortable as you want. We still have low energy prices when looked at in a global perspective. Be cozy. But also, if you're chilly at 68, weat a hoodie if you don't want to turn the thermostat up.

People are fixated on numbers. I don't get it. I wish thermostats just had a dial with blue and red instead of people fixating on a number. People as me every day what should I set my thermostat to? Fuck if I know man I know people who keep their heat at 65, people who keep theor heat at 78 and all points between.

By the way, the answer to your question is you'll probably save a couple dollars assuming you have a relatively decent forced air furnace. A couple bucks man. To be uncomfortable for 8 to 10 hours a day. If you want to save more money than that drive 5 miles per hour under the speed limit, make sure your tires are properly inflsted by checking it every week, and stop your engine at stoplights.

We're sleeping under covers. Why would anyone be uncomfortable?

If people are gone during the day consider a smart thermostat tied to your phones so the t-stat sets back when no one is home. For us that plus night time setback has really made a difference. With fluctuating prices sometimes hard to tell on the cost but both comed and Nicor include usage charts so easy to track usage over same billing period last year.

Edit and often there are good power company rebates which help fund the t-stat purchase.

Not much. I'll probably pay for that at some point. Exercise helps a little.

68 in the winter if below 20 degrees outside. Otherwise 65 at all times. Very comfortable.

I can't take the cold like I used to, so it's 70° whenever I'm home or only gonna be gone for two or three hours. It's weird, I don't really sweat in the summer and now get cold quickly. While 70 isn't all that warm, a 1/4 zip and stadium blanket get the job done.
