Opening night, and I'm watching Preds-Lightning before the Hawks start, and I've got to commend the production of this ESPN broadcast. First off, I don't know shit about hockey commentators, but these guys in the booth and the guy down on the ice seem like they're having a good time and mix in some sensationalism along with calling the action and giving insight.

What's the best to me, though, is the way the rink is mic'd up. The swoosh of the ice is pleasing, as is the clap of the puck on the stick or off the boards. Something about hearing the sport this way makes me appreciate it more, I dunno.

MVM Sean McDonough has PbP duties for the Hawks game. Mods please move to the DB section.

this is the most boring broadcast I've watched in a long time. I'll even take Boog over this ESPN NHL shit.

I know McDonough is a Boston guy but I don't think he's great for hockey. There needs to be a sharpness to the voice that Foley and Emrick had, that Hughson had in a different way.

Something in between a horse racing voice and a football voice. McDonough is a bit too far on the football end of the spectrum.

McDonough is better at hockey than baseball.

Sad news about Barry Melrose retiring with a Parkinson's diagnosis, or maybe that a previous private diagnosis has gotten worse. If there is a broadcast media wing of the Hockey Hall of Fame, he should be in it.

I have ESPN for a month because I bought Sling to watch the MLB playoffs. I'm very impressed by what the NHL is doing with transparency in the replay room.

Many HS games I've officiated (football or basketball) have had student sections insert said school mascot into, "...and the home of the..." Pretzels, Marcos, Wolves, Bison, Crusaders, Wooden Shoes, etc.

The IHL Atlanta Knights did that years before the Vegas team did.

I do miss the old IHL and to some extent the meatball hockey fan in me misses the UHL. Robin Big Snake was a favorite of mine in Rockford.

I still get out of town friends complaining about the cheering that goes on at Hawks games during the anthem.

People forget it was originally a drinking song. IMV it should be a bit raucous. Not a dirge like MANY like to do it these days. This past Sunday in London for example.

I agree. I was sorry to hear about Barry Melrose leaving the broadcast booth due to his Parkinson's disease. I've got that disease myself and it is a real bitch to deal with. Melrose is a very good announcer and analyst in my opinion and I wish him well.

I've experienced this in person...it's really, really lame.

Stars fans generally are. They're so into their Dank Memes Jumbotron.
