Derecho is just a bow of a storm system. There was going back a decade or so that plowed across the westerns suburbs, arlington heights, mount prospect, des plaines, schaumburg, etc. I'll never forget driving home and literally all electricity was out for a 20 mile stretch of northwest highway/14.

There was a derecho last year you dolts! Early June -- most damage was eastern I believe, but there were some tornados with it in Illinois.

I think this thing started as a buzzword a few years back.

So its about 137 year old word. And it comes from a storm in Iowa, which I guess explains a lot.
