He didn't have a terrible arm. If I recall correctly he had a 90+ mph fastball.

You are dead wrong there Nas. How old are you? did you even see him play?

 I busy watching George Bell and Ivan Calderon.

Bonds was the most feared hitter ever. Yeah, he used, so did Nefi perez and 100's of others, but Bonds was absolute feared at the plate.

For three ridiculous juiced up years. Over the majority of his career he was not more "feared" than Frank or Cabrera.

Pitchers weren't exactly walking guys to get to Frank Thomas either, bagman.

3 of them prior to gaining 100 lbs of muscle in 1999

Before that he led the league in intentional walks 5 times in 13 seasons.

Bonds was always a beast. I wish he didnt juice, he certainly belongs in the HOF. Moreso than any other of the steroid era blacklisted players.

Hawg, Jorr is right.

Before Roids Bonds was a great player. From 2001 on he became the baseball machine.

We shouldnt confuse the two.

Without juicing he's still in the hall, but he wasnt better than Griffey

I dont know about Clemens. He had a really great stretch but he was already flaming out (pun intended) by like 28 or 29 yrs old. He compiled a lot of stats after he left for Toronto (which I am assuming was the beginning of the steroids...)

Imagine if he started taking steroids when he was in his 20's? You still have to be a great player to do what he did or many other players would have put up video game numbers. If he saw a decent pitch he crushed it.

I might be wrong, but I think without a doubt Bonds and Clemens should be in. As far as Bonds/Griffey, my like for Griffey might get in the way of that decision but I think it is very close.

He just wasn't the hitter Thomas was.

The year Dick Allen had in 1972 was something that was almost unbelievable given the era and the ballpark where he played half his games. White Sox players just didn't hit 25 homers, let alone get near 40. And not because everyone who played there was horseshit. It was a tough place to hit for power. The same factors gave Sox pitchers inflated numbers.

When Frank came up and started putting up those numbers, it was just as unbelievable. But then suddenly there were a couple guys on every team who were doing similar things.

I think at Griffey's peak he was better. But Bonds peak (not including 2001 and later) was longer

Don't we have to compare more than just being a hitter though? When they talk about 5 tool players, hitting for power and hitting for average are just 2 of the 5 tools.

Griffey really wasn't the base stealing guy a young Bonds was or at least my recollection is that. Close between the two.

He was damn close.

Surely.

He was the best or second best player in baseball. But some people act like the roids just helped him a little.

He bested his career high by 26 homeruns in 2001.

Definitely close. I side with Griffey because I think dominant CF defense is better than 30 stolen bases.

No. Hitting makes the game. And it espciallly made the game during the era we're discussing where it was played much like 12" slow-pitch softball and there was very little premium on defense. We're discussing these guys because of their bats. Their defense in left or at first is like talking about which car has a nicer hood ornament.

If you want to say early career Bonds or Griffey was a "more complete" player than Thomas, I won't argue. But the Bonds everyone says is the "greatest I've ever seen" was a single tool player.
