Congrats and a big cheer for the Pirates. Clinched their second consecutive post season birth last night after 18 without. Their plan is working and the town is excited.

I think the Pie Rats have a good young lineup, esp. in the outfield. What will hurt them in the short term-- Russell Martin is unlikely to return.

Cutch is fun to watch. Owner says Martin stays... we will see.

Interesting. I guess after 2 straight postseason appearances, at some point they are gonna have to pay up to retain a veteran. I don't think Martin will be cheap, considering the state of MLB catching

Beautiful ballpark, great fans, cool city, historically terrible ownership that still somehow isn't as odious as the Cubs'. I'm happy for them.

Oh, sorry to be that guy, but it's a postseason berth. No placentas in the playoffs.

I think this is the first time I have ever heard Pittsburgh referred to as cool.

And to think their most famous(?) food offering involves a sandwich with massive slices of bread loaded up with fries and vinegary cabbage.

I'll pass.

They've done great things with the place. All the industry shut down, so it's had to reinvent itself as more or less an overgrown college town. Their architectural boat tours are almost as good as ours, the views from the funicular are cool, there are lots of good places to eat if you know where to look. As far as midwestern-ish cities go, it's preferable to Milwaukee, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and though I can't speak from experience, surely Cleveland. I'd say it's most like Milwaukee, but with better scenery than just being Chicago Junior. (Wisconsinites flip.their.shit if you call it that, by the way.)

Pittsburgh is the cool city of this state.
I know it's not saying much, but I would rather go there then Philly, even though I'm only two hours from philly and four from the burgh.

You are right. The heath care/chemical/biotech stuff has transformed the town. Detroit should have been able to transform like this.

Not everyone likes those sandwiches. I eat one a year and if I happen to miss that one I do not care. They are decent drunk food mostly.

My buddy in Cleveland took me to a place that served sandwiches like that. It was okay, but nothing I would have to eat again.

The one downside to Pittsburgh's reinvention, according to one of my Pittsburgh friends (who left for Charlotte), is that none of these universities who bought up all the buildings pay any property taxes on them, which understandably starves the government a bit.

Ya Know the pirates PLAN was to draft as much young cheap talent as possible....and they traded guys away to be in that position. DLee and Aram, are 2 that come to mind.

No that was the plan before this plan. They have had quite a few.

Pittsburgh never traded Derrek Lee away. He came over in one of the Marlins' many fire sales. I think you were thinking of the sausage-slaying Randall Simon, but as pittmike said, management of 2003 had precious little to do with what the Pirates eventually accomplished.
