Good for them.

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) -- Three patrol officers are suing the Normal Police Department, saying the central Illinois town improperly disciplined them for failing to meet arrest quotas.

The Pantagraph in Bloomington reports ( http://bit.ly/1sI4aZc ) the officers filed the lawsuit in McLean County Circuit Court. They say they were disciplined for not meeting a minimum number of arrests per month for traffic, criminal and ordinance violations.

Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner and Normal City Manager Mark Peterson declined comment Wednesday. They said they haven't seen the lawsuit. Earlier this year the police chief said the department has performance standards but it doesn't have quotas.

The officers are asking for an injunction to end the town's policy on arrest minimums.

Seems reasonable. Kind of dumb to force cops to give out tickets and make arrests when none are warranted. I suppose those rules are in place to avoid cops sitting in the doughnut shop all day.

Probably a better use of their time than what many actually do.

Towns have bull shit laws to make sure you meet quotas. In Iowa, for instance, it is illegal to have a license plate holder around your license plate. $95 ticket.

is that bullshit though? anything that impedes the view of your plate is understandably bad. i had one on mine until i took it off because it was stupid. but it DID cover up some of the bottom. I also have two hitch balls blocking the view of the plate. i have no idea why ive never been asked to remove them. must be because im driving a ford truck in wisconsin....

Quotas should be illegal.

Saw those nuts every day at the Rolling Meadows courthouse for two weeks straight. Had to have been one of the sheriffs.

The problem is that everyone knows violations such as speeding are occurring constantly, so why weren't these officers able to write the minimum number of tickets? Are we talking 1 per day or 20 per day?

At a fundamental level, these officers are basically suing themselves out of a job, i.e., there isn't enough crime or traffic violations to justify their employment.
