If you want the SEC champ or Notre Dame or whoever, you’d have to buy the hypothetical UCF game. There is no split for something that doesn’t exist, but I’d imagine the P5 could/would find a way to come out ahead.
It would likely be a rule that one of the teams has to be a non-P5 so they don't sue. That's how they got into the BCS. The total projections for viewers go down and so does the offer to pay for the game.

But, even if the tv payout is the exact same, the P5 is then splitting 8/8 instead of 7/8. ESPN is currently paying around half a billion a year for the playoff + the other affiliated bowls. It's hard to know if that number goes up or down but that means that a P5 only playoff is worth about $18 million more per conference every year if they don't have to split it with a non-P5 group of schools or school.

I assume you are referring to the breaking up of 5 star talent at the top that you brought up. A P5-only playoff does that just as much as one that includes a non-P5 team. It's not like 5 star talent that would otherwise go to Alabama or Clemson is going to Coastal Carolina because they have a path to get blown out by Alabama in the CFP.

But why would total projected viewers go down if you’re adding two games, even if one of those games has the MAC champion?

I understand they don’t want to split money evenly with a mid major, but I’m just not seeing how the pot isn’t larger.

For the same reason I don't want the Big Ten to share their tv deal with the MAC or Conference USA.

Idc if it’s UCF, Utah, or Iowa State.

If they have more exposure to take away top recruits then that is a win for college football.

I feel like this is you being threatened as a Purdue fan that better group of 5 schools will get into the playoff before the boilermakers.

I’m sure that’s what this is.

You can’t be this invested in the sanctity of power 5 football without some personal motivation.

Over the course of the deal, there will be millions more viewers each year for 2nd place Big Ten/Big 12/ACC team than there will be for the MAC champion and ESPN or Fox or CBS will be willing to pay more money based on those projections. Alabama vs. Ball State is going to get far worse ratings than Alabama vs. Wisconsin would.

I would be surprised if Purdue plays a college football playoff game in the next 20 years whether it is a 4 team or 8 team playoff with or without the non-P5.

Once again though, you aren't refuting anything I say.

For the same reason that Jim Harbaugh doesn't want to split his salary with me.

We are both trying to make as much money as we can. He just happens to be better at it than me and he wants to continue to make that money.

What did you refute exactly?

The elite talent may get spread out in a 8 team playoff but not to the non-P5. Coastal Carolina isn't going to be a factor for 5 star talent except in extreme circumstances like the kids dad being a coach. Iowa may benefit though.

Idc what program it is as long it’s not Alabama, Clemson, or OSU.

I do enjoy you bringing up CC and Ball State tho.

That’s pretty good.

Let me say it one more time. An 8 team playoff with or without the non-P5 does the exact same thing in terms of spreading out talent from Alabama, Clemson, and OSU. 5 star recruits go to P5 programs.

I understand that. But are we now arguing for an 8 team P5 tournament or just going from 4 to 8? I thought the latter.

As an aside, a quick google tells me that BCS era games including Boise State, pre B12 TCU, and NIU all drew higher ratings than P5 v P5 matchups in the same year.

I'm not arguing for a 4 team or 8 team playoff. I'm saying that if an 8 team playoff happens it will likely be P5 only. I honestly don't think 4 or 8 teams matters much though. I think it will still be 2 teams with overwhelming odds to win it. In some years, maybe 3. The only thing that would change would be an upset to one of them that simply makes the path easier for the other team. This year, OSU gets upset by Cincinnati and we get Clemson/Alabama again.

In almost all cases, the non-P5 team gets the worst ratings.

Boise State seemed to be the outlier there.

By this fake-ass recruit rating system, Kelly's pretty good.

Ok great I don’t think I’ve argued against that point.

I just think it’s better for college football fans and programs if the elitist attitude could relax a little bit when it comes to considering the best group of 5 teams.

The bowl system is horrible business. Hundreds of millions more would be made by cutting out the middleman and going to a real playoff like every other level of college.

I looked at that same link; the Andy Dalton led TCU Rose Bowl from the 2010 season crushed the other non-championship bowls.

In total, mid-majors played in 8 games in the BCS era (adjusting for conference realignment). 4 of those games were the lowest rated game that year, so it’s a coin flip whether a 2nd tier P5 actually outdraws a top notch mid major.

One of those years, Boise St - TCU easily outdrew Iowa, which is a decent example of a P5/2nd class type program.

Boise does seem to draw. I don't know if they still do though. That was pretty unique.

It's still a pretty common theme that the non-P5 normally hurts ratings.

Do better Seminoles. These asswipes deserve a good early beating. There is no more despicable school, students and fan base.
