I think the Big Ten outlawed dunking in warmups after that brawl.

During the Lee Arthur Scott years at Gordon, Versace had a similar warmup he called "Pretzel and Tips" that ended with a barrage of dunks.

A friend of mine's son laid a donut for Kentucky today. About 0-15 from the field. That's tough

How does Shaka Smart keep getting HC jobs. He hasn't done anything in the tourney since that 2011 VCU run

2022 - 9 seed Marquette bounced in the opening round 95-63 by 8 seed UNC
2021 - No. 3 Texas upset by No. 14 Abilene Christian in the first round
2018 - loses an opening round 10-7 matchup to Nevada (Wolfpack, not Runnin' Rebs)
2016 - Texas 6 seed loses in the opening round to 11 seed Northern Iowa
2015 - VCU 7 ousted in the opening round by 10 seed tOSU
2014 - 5 seed VCU pinned in the opening round by 3:16 (12 seed)
and so on

And then this year after getting a favorable 2-15 matchup against Vermont (do they even hoop in Vermont) Smart gets schooled by old man Izzo

Had a good season overall at Marquette, though. I don't think they were expected to do much. Plus, last year, UNC went to the national championship game.

But Texas was pathetic under him, that's for sure. I'm sure Marquette will take the 27 or whatever wins . . . for a few seasons. I think Texas fired him the day after his last tournament debacle.

Problem might be they're brainiac college admins who are sold on Shaka as a "cerebral" head coach. Good coach, no doubt, but if he can't win in the tourney he needs to go coach some non-Div-I school or maybe the Ivy league.

yeah, i guess losing to Izzo and UNC--even post Roy Williams UNC--not as faceplant-ish as Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian. Smart has 8? I think tourney wins. 5 wins that VCU 2011 Final Four run--5 wins b/c first year of the play-in and VCU came out of the play-in over USC (iirc). I think he's 3-9 since 2011 in the tourney. 2 rd of 32 appearances with VCU following that 2011 run and then topping Vermont this year--a full decade btw tourney wins.

In the 64 team era, no team that was unranked to begin the season and was seeded one or two has advanced past the round of eight. Two teams fit that description this year- Purdue and Marquette.

Yep been saying all year that I didnt think the Big 10 was going to do very well. I am not sure the answer but the programs in the Big 10 have to make some adjustments if they want to start doing better in the big dance.

They need to find a way to stop the regular season from being 20 games of Big Ten teams playing football on the basketball court. They can't break away from the overly physical play in the conference season that you rarely see in the tournament outside of the Tenn-Duke game. It hurts recruiting. It wears down the top teams physically. You watch an SEC or Big 12 team and they play a more wide open style that no Big Ten team really plays.

So how do you change that? I agree with the idea, but just not sure how they go about making those changes.

It was sad from the get go. And I accidentally got my IU T-shirt caught in the zipper of my jacket and ruined it!

I will grab a new one when I go down there on Saturday. Visiting my daughter for the last time before graduation day on May 6th.

2022 - Painter, Howard
2021 - Howard

Find a wider pool of refs. Create points of emphasis for them about the way Big Ten games have been called in the past. Release public statements about trying to remove the overly physical parts of the game that are clearly unique to the Big Ten.
