Big Dog isn't half the college player Zion is. And Big Dog was awesome. Zion, OTOH, is having one of the greatest seasons in CBB history.

Glenn Robinson was pretty amazing. Too bad he hurt his back against Ostertag in the Kansas win. He looked off vs. Duke in his final college game.

Tim Duncan was pretty great in college as well. Saw him live at the United Center in the Great Eight non-tournament they used to have. Will likely never be a player who plays all four years like he did ever again.

I know what you mean, and agree, but that last sentence does sound a little funny.

This is college we're talking about so I'll go out on a limb. Scott Skiles. He always impacted the college game. Best college player I ever saw play live. Many had a greater NBA career, but not many as good as his final college year.

Loved this Skiles moment 'Skiles went on to become one of the Big Ten’s all-time great villains, booed in every opposing arena because of his cocky demeanor, not to mention his talent. Example: After Michigan’s pudgy guard Antoine Joubert had guaranteed a win over Michigan State, Skiles walked up to him before tipoff and said, “Show me what you got, fat boy.” And then went out and scored 33 points to lead an MSU victory. He was the Big Ten’s MVP his senior season, when he averaged 27.4 points per game.'

A second one calling him the 3rd best player in MSU history. Why he's No. 3: It's the highest spot available. The debate between Skiles and Steve Smith, however, is difficult. Both carried MSU to needed heights in an era when winning wasn't an every-year occurence. What gives the nod to Skiles, however slightly, is something Heathcote said recently: He only ever coached two players who could will a team to victory — Skiles and Magic Johnson.

Are you sure? Statistically Big Dog is pretty far ahead and he wasn't playing with an all star team.

Can you imagine the ratings that would pull now?

Hell, even the Moncrief vs. Bird (regional final?) was a big draw.

Laettner had a good pro career, though. Not a superstar by any stretch but it was solid.

I would have said Magic but he only played two years. I would have said Bird but he played in a lesser conference. Certainly good answers though. I'm still staying with Walton and Ewing. I'm too young for Alcindor and Maravich, Walt.

Skiles supposedly gave him the business throughout the game, even when Joubert was on the bench. I loved that maniac immediately thereafter.

Alcindor :D

Tony Kornheiser the other day put David Thompson and Bill Walton on the top of his list, whom I don't really remember in college myself.

And to think that in practice, Alcindor and a handful of equally ineligible freshmen routinely beat the returning national championship team that would go on to repeat the title run.

Google Walton at UCLA...I have mentioned that the kid from 76ers use his low post game instead of shooting the trey....Thompson and Towes invented the alley oop 8)

No need, I remember how much of a treat it was to watch him on the rare Portland t.v. game and occasional sports highlights. I just wish could've seen him match up against Kareem in their prime more.

The writing about them both in SI back then painted one helluva picture though.
