Do they need to lure QBs? Don't they have former recruits starting all over the SEC?

How about this guy? I just started searching around for guys who coached Drew Brees.

Greg Alan Olson (born March 1, 1963) is an American football coach who is the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). From 2013 to 2014 he was the offensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011.

Coaching career[edit]

Olson was offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Central Washington University from 1990-1993, where he coached 16 year NFL veteran quarterback Jon Kitna. While at Central, Olson also coached the university's wrestling team. Prior to joining the CWU coaching staff, he was a graduate assistant at Washington State University for three seasons. He coached the defensive backs at WSU for one season and was the linebacker coach for two years. He also coached running backs at Spokane Falls Community College in 1986. After leaving CWU, Olson coached quarterbacks at Purdue University, where he played a key role in the development of Pro Bowl and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees. Under Olson, Brees was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 1999 and 2000 while winning the Maxwell Award as the nation's most outstanding player in 2000.

Olson previously served as the quarterbacks coach of the Detroit Lions, where he worked with Joey Harrington. He served as Lions offensive coordinator following the firing of Steve Mariucci and the demotion of Ted Tollner during the 2005 season.

He was the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams from 2006-2007. In his first year with the Rams in 2006, he helped guide a high-powered offense that ranked sixth in the NFL in total offense (360.4 yards per game) and a passing offense that ranked third (247.6) in the NFC. Under Olson's direction the Rams became just the fourth team in NFL history to produce a 4,000 yard passer (Marc Bulger), a 1,500 yard rusher (Stephen Jackson) and two 1,000 yard receivers (Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce). Bulger, Holt and Bruce were all selected to the Pro Bowl. Bulger also posted career-highs in passing yards (4,301), passing touchdowns (24), and passing attempts (588) and completions (370) while ranking second in the NFL in interception percentage (1.4%). Jackson also had a career-year in 2006, leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage with 2,334, and he led all NFL running backs with 90 receptions and was fifth in the NFL in rushing yards with 1,528.

In January 2008, Olson was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be their quarterbacks coach following the dismissal of Paul Hackett. On September 3, 2009, the day before the team's final preseason game, the Buccaneers announced that Olson would replace Jeff Jagodzinski as Offensive Coordinator. Olson was responsible for the development of QB Josh Freeman, the 17th overall pick in the 2009 draft. Under Olson’s guidance, Freeman threw for 8,898 yards and 51 touchdowns in his first three seasons as a starter. In 2011, Freeman ranked eighth in the NFL with a 62.8 completion percentage and 13th with 3,592 passing yards. In Olson’s second season as offensive coordinator with the Bucs in 2010, Freeman ranked sixth in the NFL with a 95.9 passer rating while throwing for 3,451 yards, 25 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Olson helped guide the Buccaneers to one of their best offensive seasons in team history, setting franchise records for yards per play (5.61), average per rush (4.64 yards), average per pass play (7.21), passer rating (96.2) and fewest interceptions thrown (six). The Buccaneers also finished with the fourth-most points scored (341), third-most yards in total offense (5,362) and second-best third down percentage (42.2%) in a single season in team history.

The Buccaneers were the youngest team in the NFL in 2010 and WR Mike Williams, a fourth-round draft pick, finished the year leading all rookie receivers in the league in every major receiving category while setting a single-season team record with 11 touchdown receptions. RB LeGarrette Blount’s 1,007 rushing yards led all rookie running backs and he became just the second undrafted rookie running back in NFL history to finish with over 1,000 yards. It marked the first time since 1968 that a team had two different players lead all rookies in rushing and receiving yards. [1] He was fired on January 2, 2012, after his team posted a 4–12 record.[2]

In January 2012, Olson was hired to be the Assistant Head coach/quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In January 2013, Olson was hired to be the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders, taking over for the recently fired Greg Knapp.

In 2014,Olson was fired as offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders

On January 21, 2015, Olson was hired to be the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.[3]

I hope they hire someone who runs the triple option so I can watch more of it in TV.

Purdue has a QB with raw talent in Blough. He's been gushed over by many when he was coming out of high school. The problem was Hazell and his inability to develop talent. Not a chance they get Fleck if WMU runs the table. He'll get a better offer. Miles is a big name but he says he want to call plays again. The guy could get any talent he wanted at LSU and their offenses consistently stunk. Plus, he's 63. Jeff Brohm wouldn't be a bad choice. For offensive gurus/coordinator options there are Rhett Lashlee and Major Applewhite. Spack is a safe choice for when everyone else turns you down.

They should continue to hire coaches that refuse to recruit the Chicago area.

There certainly is a chance. He's not going to Notre Dame or LSU. Those types of schools don't hire MAC coaches very often no matter how good they are. There will be a lot of competition for him. Just look at the last two NIU coaches who left as they were dominating the MAC. One went to Minnesota and the other to NC State.

Don't get me wrong. Fleck may go somewhere else but it's not like he is a lock to some national power.

The Les Miles rumors won't go away either. They may get him in quick so he can start recruiting. Please no.

Lots of chatter they are making a run at Dan Mullen of Miss. State. Dave Clawson a possibility too. Don't be surprised if they hire a current power 5 conference head coach.

Mullen is a very good coach...smart offensive guy...ran the offense at Florida when Tebow was there.

I don't have my hopes up on Mullen. That would be quite a huge get. Clawson is much more likely but even with that you never know.

Former NFL offensive coordinator Greg Olson is in the mix to become Purdue University’s next head football coach.

Two sources told Sporting News that Olson has interviewed for the vacancy created by last month’s firing of Darrell Hazell. Olson also was dismissed from his job last month when axed as the Jaguars' offensive coordinator following the team's 2-5 start. The move didn’t create a spark as the Jags (2-7) have lost both subsequent contests since assistant Nate Hackett assumed the play-calling responsibilities.

seriously guys, we need to close down this superfluous thread and focus on the #1 issue at hand that totally transcends purdue football: just how unequivocally shit is jay cutler?

i swear that jay being from "santa claus, indiana" = he was quite possibly recruited by purdue, only to ultimately snub them and go to vanderbilt, which caused SOME purdue fans to say "man i fucking hate jay cutler!" and pop a hateboner that hasn't gone away for the last 10-12yrs (don't worry about calling your doctor for that cuz this ain't viagra; it's a perfectly normal thing.... just ask brick! =P)

No chance.

Right now it's between Fleck, Miles, Troy Calhoun, and Skip Holtz.

He was recruited by Purdue but chose Illinois and then Illinois dropped him and Purdue wasn't really interested then. Kyle Orton was a far superior college quarterback though so it wasn't a big deal.

Seems Les Miles may be interviewing today. Still unconfirmed.

Still not sure I buy Miles coming to Purdue. But obviously if you can get him, that is a good hire for them.

Calhoun or Holtz are probably more realistic.

At this point I would be happy with Calhoun, Fleck, Clawson, or obviously Mullen but that is really unlikely.

If Miles brings two Alabama assistants like he is claiming he can do then I am all in on him too.

Holtz doesn't excite me. Spack would be good but not great.

It will now be Sunday or Monday. Makes sense. Miles still the favorite.

We’ve been told that Purdue has interviewed an estimated 10-15 candidates in a search that has been described as “messy.”

Every source seems to have a different take on free agent Les Miles’ place in the search - some think he’s still in the mix; some believe he’s out - but indications from sources are that Western Michigan’s P.J. Fleck is ahead. One source even said it’s “his job if he wants it.”

Fleck, who turns 36 next week, is said to be interested in the job, but he’s curious what other opportunities might present themselves. For one, a source said he particularly is interested in North Carolina.

It's down to Fleck and Calhoun barring a major surprise. I'd be very happy with either.

Fleck and Purdue would be a great marriage. He would be run off of campus within three years if he went to a school that gets 5 star recruits. He can craft Purdue into a program like Alvarez did with Wisconsin.

The Troy Calhoun thing is so far in left field to me. Has no Purdue ties that I am aware of and has been running an offense that is anathema to Purdue's public identity as the cradle of quarterbacks. Fleck can wait out till after the MAC title game and see if other potential job openings (Oregon, ND) lead to a domino effect and something better than Purdue opens up.

Calhoun only runs the triple option so much out of necessity because he is at an academy. 35% of his offense last year was passing. He would be much more pass happy at Purdue.

I think it is Fleck. Purdue is putting huge money into football. It's a great opportunity for Fleck.
