I had graduated by then, but 88-89 was my favorite team ever for the Illini (even including the 2004-05 team). The team which crushed me was the Bruce Douglas / Efrem Winters 1983-84 team which scrambled to the regional final with no meaningful NBA talent and got jobbed by having to play Kentucky at Rupp Arena. I watched that in one of the TV lounges at the Union, which I think made the loss even more annoying.

I remember that squad too. I was in the 5th grade at the time. They were both Super Sophs and had they both turned pro they'd have been first rounders. They stayed in school and fell off after that. They lost to Bowie and Turpin on their home floor but they gave them all they wanted in that game.

Efrem turned his ankle the previous game and was very limited. That is one of my earliest Illini memories. I really liked Efrem Winters.

I used to be an Illini hater, even when I was in school there and for quite awhile afterward. The Blue Demons were my team. When Cox and Hambric boycotted DePaul and sent guys to Champaign I hated Illinois hoops even more. My favorite was when they lost to Austin Peay. It was especially sweet because Bobby Thomas, a guy who I was half-ass friends with from caddying at Evanston G.C., was on the Austin Peay team. A couple days later he missed a free throw and A-P lost to Providence.

I never found Illinois and De Paul to be in competition. Illinois was a far off team from my perspective as a kid.

It's amazed me at how much that campus (and in particular the athletic department) was awash in cocaine and weed. I got there in 84 and saw that for many "stars" getting blotto was step 3 after waking up and eating breakfast.

I got there in 1982. They still had the rule that if a first semester freshman didn't maintain a D average the parents got a certified letter saying "come get Joeys shit because we don't want to take your money any more."

I lived at Florida Avenue. One of my friends lived a few floors below on a floor with 60 guys, not all freshman. 10 were asked not to return and 2 more survived another semester because they had taken a 1 credit PE class and gotten an A. The booze and weed was just too much for them.

The biggest deterrent to college success is that first taste of freedom. Some people cannot handle not being monitored.

That was my issue as a freshman. I spent more time shooting pool in the Union than studying (what a great pool room that was).

They were totally in competition, especially in recruiting the City. I was pissed when Henson got Eddie Johnson, but it worked out because Meyer was able to recruit Aguirre while he was at Westinghouse to see Johnson. I still hear guys argue about whether Ben Wilson was going to DePaul or Champaign.

I don't think I knew DePaul had sports. Not exagerrating either.

There was a time when DePaul basketball was the biggest team in Chicago, bigger than the Bears.

Yeah, unless your age is the reason you have no reason to not know quite a bit about that era of DePaul basketball.

I'm sure it was but it certainly wasn't when I was paying attention.

Yes, that was a fabulous room.

I managed to survive because I found a girlfriend early on, and she didn't like to drink. We didn't last, but 35 years later she is still one of my closest friends.

They coasted. A drubbing of DePaul will follow later this week...even if the game tugs on Dr. Ken's loyalties.....

The end of that game was not good. Going to be another long season. A win over DePaul not assured.

Not everybody can be as good as Bruce Weber in Season 1.

When do you suppose they have the John Groce funeral?

Below Giants Stadium. He's gonna be taken care of.

I caught the end of the game as Deon Thomas (?) confidently stated the Illini were in their "bend but don't break" mode...that was perilously close to breaking!

DePaul vs Illinois tonight! Would've been epic back in the 80s and parts of the 90s.

Will still be pretty epic if DePaul can pull off the upset.

"shakes and Julie" sounds like the name of a hipster ice cream parlor that would be in West Town.

Needs to cut the man bun.

Learned to tonight that DePaul still sucks. Hooefully Mark Smith is the new Efrem Winters when it comes to FT shooting.

What am I missing here? Last night I checked the score of this game at CBS Sports and saw that the final was 125-114 which I found hard to believe unless it went several overtimes. I just read the story in the Tribune and it said the final was 82-73. And here's the box score:

Hopefully, that ends up being the team motto this year. DEPAUL: We don't embarrass ourselves anymore!

What the hell got into Jordan this year?

That big guy on Wake Forest looks pretty good. You don't see a lot of big post-up guys like that these days. 7'1"/280
