He didn't need to. That Illinois team had the third easiest road the championship game in the history of the tournament. They had to beat a 16,9,12,3,3 to get to the championship.

Only 2 teams had it easier than that. Kansas in 2008 who had to beat a 16, 8,12,10 and then finally a 1 before beating another 1 in the final.

But, no one had it easier than Gonzaga. 16,8,4,11,7. Gonzaga can even go further and claim they didn't beat a single team inside the top 20 in 2017 other than West Virginia.
