NEW YORK -- Federal prosecutors have announced charges of fraud and corruption in college basketball, including against four coaches.

Auburn assistant Chuck Person, Oklahoma State assistant Lamont Evans, Arizona assistant Emanuel Richardson and USC assistant Tony Bland.

They were among 10 people charged in New York City federal court. Others included managers, financial advisers and representatives of a major international sportswear company. The details will be discussed at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon.

In court papers, prosecutors said the FBI has since 2015 been investigating the criminal influence of money on charges and student-athletes who participate in intercollegiate basketball governed by the NCAA.

They said the probe has revealed numerous instances of bribes paid by athlete advisers, including financial advisers and associate basketball coaches, to assistant and associate basketball coaches to exert influence over student athletes.

Just pay the players an hourly rate and let them sell their likeness and make appearances and be done with it.

I know a lot of people at Illinois expected Lamont Evans to become an assistant there after Underwood was hired.

This could be a big problem for Illinois.

Looks like a big problem for Louisville. I think this might be Pitino's swan song.

Illinois is not an Adidas school. They should be okay.

Underwood will probably get off clean, too, because of how this scheme went down without head coach or school knowledge.

Until the assistant coach saves himself from jail time by talking.

At a minimum, it puts a lot of eyes in a negative way on the head coaches involved. Anyone with a brain knows that they weren't completely in the dark.

True. I don't think Arizona has any assistant coaches left.

The only shocking thing is that it took this long to know this happens. Let me know when they finally get the great coach K.

There is a zero percent chance the head coaches did not know. Proving that may be difficult.

This is an almost yearly event for Auburn.

I still don't know what constitutes corruption in the cesspool of college sports.

Or who is surprised or cares?

Otherwise than the U.S. attorney's who are doing their usual grandstanding. Pointless

It's par for the course and has been since the $100 handshake in the Wooden era. This is also imo a victimless crime.

I wish that the time and effort was spent on all the mini Bernie Madoffs or the thousands of money launderers still running rampant and doing real harm, protected by a veneer of acceptability

Big announcement coming out of Louisville tomorrow. Speculation is that Pitino is getting fired!

Chuck Person suspended by Auburn. he could be looking at jail time. FBI has some pretty damning evidence against him.

Rick Pitino on getting Bowen (who he bribed $100,000):

-----------

"We got lucky on this one," Pitino told Terry Meiners of News Radio 840. "I had an AAU director call me and ask me if I'd be interested in a player (Bowen). I saw him against another great player from Indiana. I said 'Yeah, I'd be really interested.' They had to come in unofficially, pay for their hotel, pay for their meals. We spent zero dollars recruiting a five-star athlete who I loved when I saw him play. In my 40 years of coaching this is the luckiest I've been."

At the least I assume the recipients are up for tax evasion.

I'm just hoping IU gets snagged in this. They are an Adidas school

Louisville cleaning house. AD gone and Pitino almost certainly is too.

Not a shock as they need to scramble to not get the death penalty as these things happened while on probation.

I think it's too late to avoid death penalty.

This scandal caught NCAA off guard and they look really bad. The FBI didn't trust them enough to include them so the NCAA will have to act harshly to regain any shred of credibility. They found out about this when we did.

Just wait until Adidas execs sing to save some jail time. Other Adidas schools will be involved when all of this is settled. Once again, I'm really hoping IU is one of them. We all know Crean was a dirtbag.

Penn State didn't get the death penalty.

Penn State didn't get the death penalty.

A few reasons why, the coach involved was off the staff for over a decade at the time and it was not related to issues of competition (which the NCAA has jurisdiction over).

What happened at Penn State was the worst thing to happen in college sports, but it happened in an area outside of NCAA jurisdiction. Besides, NCAA rules for the death penalty have the repeat offenders clause. Only a 2nd major violation within 5 years of the 1st can trigger the death penalty.

That is why only Louisville is being talked about as a death penalty school while others were involved.
