With athletic departments reeling from the coronavirus fallout and bracing for a shortened — or even canceled — college football season, schools are taking drastic measures to protect themselves financially.

Driving the news: The University of Cincinnati cut men's soccer yesterday, which will save the school roughly $800,000 per year. The Bearcats have been competing in men's soccer since 1973.

It's the second major program to be discontinued since the start of the pandemic (Old Dominion wrestling), and the sad reality is that the cuts may have only just begun.

What they're saying: "I think now that Cincinnati just did it, watch the next month. They cleared the way for other people to do it. Cincinnati puts it on a different level," one FBS athletic director told Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel.

"Athletic directors are using this as a reset," an industry source told Thamel. "Some athletic directors have been talking about cutting sports for three years and just looking for the right time."

The big picture: In a letter sent to NCAA president Mark Emmert and obtained by AP, commissioners of the AAC, Mountain West, MAC, Sun Belt and Conference USA (aka the "Group of Five") asked the NCAA to relax certain requirements for four years to provide "short-term relief."

Most notably, they asked for relief from the minimum number of sports a school must sponsor (NCAA rules require D-I schools to sponsor at least 16 varsity sports).

Long overdue.

There would be nothing wrong with schools fielding club teams and competing locally and occasionally regionally with one big trip each year funded by team fundraising efforts.

I misinterpreted this as meaning the pandemic of sports being discontinued, and the start of said pandemic was Old Dominion dropping wrestling. I was very confused.

I listened to a segment on this today while driving around. There are some sports that even within the ACC, there are only 6 teams. But the schools basically cannot cut any women's sports if they have football, due to Title IX.

So men's soccer, wrestling, lacrosse, crew... they are all totally fucked, maybe permanently, if there is no NCAA Football season. They'll start in November if they have to.

I do have a possible dumb question and hope isn't a yes, I think they will do everything they can to get football in because that's the moneymaker, right now I don't know if they will, maybe try starting in January, sadly I lean to the no, but could this lead to some colleges closing for good.

Just a thought I have, because I seen Florida State talking over the weekend, didn't go into much, just saying if no football, nothing good.

I can see college football starting the first Saturday in October with an abbreviated 10 week schedule with no off weeks so you finish before Christmas, and some Friday night games for TV. Kill all the minor bowls (who's going to go to whatever they call the Motor City Bowl this year?), run conference championships on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, and the playoffs in late January and early February.

I have read, this post a few times, now, and have yet to see, the question, which you reported as dumb, but did not ask.

My question was could if we have no college football season, would some Colleges have to close for good?

Colleges will close if students don't go back on campus next year, and that would mean no college football season.

If colleges have students on campus then there will be a football season. It may start in February but there must be a college football season.

I wonder how many NFL prospects would bail if seasons started in January? Also, would high school Seniors be eligible to play if season was second semester? My guess is yes if they have the scholarships open. Marcellus Moore played football this past fall at Plainfield North and ran track for Purdue this spring.

Kirkwood has me on ignore :(

If there's no fall semester you'll see entire universities pruned.
