The problem is that the ranking system does not punish Notre Dame for its schedule. They really don't play a better schedule than many mid-majors. They played four ranked teams this year, the highest being Stanford at No. 7 and as it turned out, they weren't even in the final poll. The only teams that ND played that were ranked in the final poll were Michigan (questionable at No. 7) and then Syracuse and Northwestern way down at the bottom. From October 13 until they got their ass kicked by Clemson they played pretty much nobody, that's as compared to teams that were trading wins and losses with LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and Alabama. If not for its name recognition, ND should be treated like Central Florida or Northern Illinois.

Even in the years when they play 3-4 top 15 teams like I mentioned?

This was a down year for their rivals but usually between USC, Florida State, Michigan, Stanford, and Michigan State you have a hard schedule.

Even in this down year, their schedule is waaaay harder than UCF or Northern ever has, so that's going a bit far the other way.


ND had a harder schedule than Clemson and Oklahoma

The four top SEC teams should probably just play for the championship.

Maybe this year a schedule that looked tough at the beginning of the year will actually be tough, unlike last year. If every six-ish years they can sneak into the playoffs once, play in NY bowls twice, play in shit bowls twice and have one "rebuilding" season I'd be okay with that, in modern college football.
