10 mill in the bank, good life, probably could easily get a D coordinator job in the NFL...why would you want to go and rebuild a college football program?

I know Lovie appears as the quiet guy, but the ego has to be involved here. Coach ego is quite a thing.

You don't turn down Illinois. It's a coach's dream job.

Dont know how long the contract is, but you need to give him 5-6 years.

Lovie could be a very good coach in college, but first he needs some talent.

The Lovie theory is that most QBs wont be you...and I fully agree...he produces W's with that theory...just sit back and wait for the overthrow for the INT and strip the ball...turnovers win games....

EXCEPT

Against good teams that dont make bad passes and dont turn the ball over....and thats where Lovies football theories fall short...He doesnt "Play to win the game!" he plays to let the other team lose the game....while it produces a decent record, I hate the plan and what it produces.

Doesn't he get both the Tampa money and Illini money if he coaches outside the nfl

You would think his agent, his son and Ryan Bakers 'Source" would have that in the contract in the OFFSETS provisions, but in Smith family tradition, might have been holding on to the request until the renewal was up!

Also, I do know that it is one of the reasons they fire guys a little early as the OFFSETS dont count sometimes if 1 year or less is left on a deal. More than 1 year and if he even works for CBS, DQ or Sears, that gets Offset.

Former Rams coordinator explaining it to me over Pina Coladas while stuck in the rain.

I thought the OFFSETS only happen if a NFL fired coach gets another NFL job. Pretty sure he gets all of his Tampa Bay money cuz he went to college.

Cuz if not, in theory, if Lovie were to be a construction worker this year, that money would be offset for Tampa Bay. That doesn't make sense. College coach would be the same as a construction worker in my mind.

Lovie probably could have been a defensive coordinator right after the Bears launched him, too, but he was content to stay home and wait for another head coaching gig. In his -- if you'll pardon the expression -- defense, he's now been a head coach since 2004 (minus 2013), and it's clear that in his mind, that's what he is. So it's on to the college game. A pretty good coach in the majors should be a very good coach in the minors, and between the poor state of Illini football and being the rare black coach in the college ranks, he shouldn't have to worry about being unceremoniously booted the way he was in Tampa. So I think it's about equal parts ego and ideal situation, or as ideal as living in a mid-sized downstate Illinois town gets.

And a lot of the kids in the area certainly know of him, so maybe you don't lose as many recruits out of state. On D, I could see a very compelling reason to want to go to Illinois because this guy is doing something right. If he outsources the offense to someone else, then maybe you have a chance, but we've seen repeatedly that doesn't happen. Overall, I say this is a mostly positive thing... Could be like Wanny at Pitt. You get to the bottom of the top third of the conference.

This is going to be an interesting hire. I don't see this suddenly giving Illinois a bounce but it could be a good long term hire depending if Lovie is willing to get his ass on the road and recruit.

All kidding aside,it's a solid hire and I'll be rooting for him. Let's not forget though that even noname coaches have put together magical seasons at various colleges including Illinois! You don't have to look that far back in the Illinois football years to see that. Hell,Cubit almost qualified for some crap Bowl last season with one more win.

I wonder if a young and undisciplined eleven playing a strict Tampa-2 against a college spread offense would basically be a sieve.

Their DC, Phair, is a Lovie guy. He's already been preaching turnovers for a year since he got here. I'd be very surprised if Lovie doesn't keep him in place.

The D improved a lot last year, ended up around 30th in total D in the country.

It's the offense that really needs work and the overall lack of talent level across the board is significant. But, as a unit, the D has been pretty steady.

Good hire but they better get some good assistants who can recruit because I can't see him putting in the effort required to be a dynamite college recruiter at his age and success level.

My big concern would be that he is a defensive minded NFL coach entering a level where offense matters significantly more for all but the truly elite teams that can win with defense.

He'll do well though. In terms of football minds he is better than pretty much everyone in the Big Ten but Meyer and Harbaugh.

They are selling so many season tickets that the servers are crashing.

At least it's the servers and not the vehicles of so many drunken athletes.

If they can accomplish three things, I will feel like the program has made progress towards a stable foundation:
1. Go 500 in conference play and play in a mid-tier bowl in 2016, 2017, 2018
2. Have Lovie stay long enough so that his first two recruiting classes graduate and compete for the league championship - so 7 years total including this season with Cubit's recruits.
3. Have a plan in place so that Lovie's successor is either the OC or the DC and is groomed as such

I want to get to a place where Kristen Bell wants to give me a blowjob whenever I feel like it. I have a better chance of that occurring than Illinois being competitive every year.
