- I keep full and incremental backups w/ Macrium Reflect, a fine program imo

- This past weekend, I got a msg of HD failure ... I'm not entirely sure it was accurate, and will dick around with the MCIM and chkdsk things later to see what I can see

- When I finally came to from passing out several days later, I booted from my Macrium Rescue CD, chose the file from a few days previous, and as of the other morning the computer was still alive and doing fine afaik

Blah, blah, blah.

Let's say my current internal C-Drive is X gigabytes. Does that mean I must purchase a new HD that is precisely X size or can I buy one that is larger (say, two or four times X)? Better said, will Macrium give a damn if the HDD size is different? Would it care if I installed the backup to a solid state drive instead of a spinnin' bucket ... I mean, standard spinning drive?

I imagine the answers are "size is irrelevant so long as it's not less" and "no, it doesn't care what type of drive it is", but I thought I'd post it to gather opinions and also so people have a reason to leave the FF/Hawk thread for a minute or two.

Also, "move", "sorry you're poor", "just buy a new computer", "die in a fire", "your computer was better two years ago", and any derivative of "Don Tiny's old" have now been invoked, so do better on the joke responses.

Thank you for your support. Any consulting fees can just be put on the Underhill's tab.

It's implicit that one has to do that to boot from a rescue CD.

Flagellate yourself for punishment.

But yes Don, size is irrelevant. Just make sure it's a tankless HD.

Hmm ... that would considerably slow any scale build-up inside the drive.

I would argue more of a Sisyphean task.

Did that; my concern was I wasn't sure if everything was still all ball-bearings these days.

Drive size matching was old days DT. Or if it was a bit swap copy. It’s not.

For whatever reason, that made me wonder if the rescue disc would be able to utilize/restore a 1:1 copy from an external drive ... I'm pretty sure Macrium uses a WinPE shell and I'm not sure if non-input USB peripherals are recognized. Not that you can probably answer that, like I said it just made me wonder that. You are awarded two points.

I make USB bootable flash rescue at work but that is Centos (Linux). As for this one I would guess if it doesn’t boot you can direct it to by booting to bios and making a change.

As long as the new HD has the same or larger capacity, you’ll be fine.

I think you're probably fine as long as the new hard drive has enough space for the cloned drive. There might be some tutorials online.

I think I misphrased my thought ... assuming boot from the rescue CD, instead of restoring an image from internal drive B:/, I wonder if it would recognize an external HD to read an image from.
