I think he turned into a "get off my lawn...back in my day" old codger near the end. I remember reading some stories where he came off as very bitter.

I think the first movie I ever saw him in was See No Evil Hear No Evil with Richard Pryor and after that I was able to see some of his more classic work
like Willy Wonka, etc... He of course was 83. They'll run that into the ground this afternoon.

Two of my favorite movies: Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

Willy Wonka and Blazing Saddles of course... but his turn as Skip Donahue in "Stir Crazy" is one of the best comedic performances of all time.

Skip was not only able to get to the heart and soul of Grossburger, he also mastered Bull riding and broke out prison all within the same movie.

his roles in farces like "everything you wanted to know about sex..." and "start the revolution without me" were also classic. that's what i always loved about wilder in his prime. he was one second away from madness and was outstanding at manifesting his explosiveness.

i remember when he did those tv movies in the late 90's i was thinking he was going to make a comeback. and then he disappeared. he famously said "i don't like showbusiness. i like the show. i don't like the business."

Here's another. He didn't disclose his Alzheimer's because he didn't want to ruin Willy Wonka for kids, "he couldn't bear the idea of one fewer smile in the world." Aw.

As long as we have Johnny Depp we are fine.

Johnny Depp ruined Willy Wonka more than Alzheimer's could.

i always thought depp had a good intuition about his characters respective to their story. he was way out of his element in "chocolate factory". it was about as dumb idea to remake as van sant's "psycho" but depp was trying way too hard to just *not* be wilder. he never made that character his own.

I think it was a sign of things to come. He probably could have done it really well if he had done it earlier in his career. He wasn't going to surpass the original though.

Finally, I found something old that doesn't suck!
