Sure, it died years ago, but now the link is dead.

One of the best places to discuss indie rock and music in general during the 2000s.

I care. The SOMB was huge for me from about 2007-2009. I owe so much great music in my collection to that board.

The 440 page thread about how fat DeRogatis is might have taken the server down.

There was a great thread on the old SOMB called "The Lonely End of the Dance Floor" where I discovered so much of the downtempo electronic stuff I love to this day. All sorts of cool under-the-radar stuff in there. Kiln and Max Richter, I remember the best. Also some sort of Turkish techno that I thought was pretty neat.

I also discovered Material Issue, Velvet Crush, the Thought Industry, Tortoise, Naked City/John Zorn, Slowdive, Mazzy Star, Stereolab, Hercules & Love Affair, Jens Lekman, and the motherfuckin' Afghan Whigs through the SOMB.

I actually read that as R.I.P. - Sound opinions on this board.

Those are the worst indie wrestler names ever except perhaps the Afghan Whigs tag-team.

I definitely missed that.

I met her once at a show. We shared a hug, but there was no breast reveal.

Yes Mike, Spiegel was the producer for the show.

Material Issue broke when I was still in HS I think. How long was this board around? I wish I had known about it.

Not sure how old it was, but I started posting there in 2007 (don't even remember my name, it wasn't Curious Hair) and it was pretty well-established by then. I think most Invision boards date back to around 2002. It mostly died in either 2009 or 2010 when the elite posters all left and started their own board called Lots Of People Posting, which was all the SOMB's meta bullshit without the giant rar-dump threads. A couple years ago, the Invision software glitched and pretty much nuked everyone's accounts, and well, now I guess it's finally dead-dead. LOPP itself may be dead too.

There was a particularly great eccentric on the board named Montana who hated everything that wasn't M83 or the Drive-By Truckers. He especially hated Sky Blue Sky when it came out and gave all the tracks alternative titles about how lame they were. I don't remember what all the dad-rock jokes are, except for one of them, "Too Spicy!", and last year when Wilco finally did make an album that really sucked and really was everything they were accused of being from 2007-2011, I just thought every cut on Schmilco should be called "Too Spicy!" So thanks for that, Montana, wherever you are. May your roads forever be gravel.

I joined in late 2002 and the SOMB was still fairly new. Opened my eyes to a shit-ton of great music.

I like to think Montana is America's older brother.

One of my favorite SOMB running gags was when a thread started sucking, someone would encode HTML to invisibly autoplay the theme song to Home Improvement. I thought I was going insane the first time it happened. I wish we could do that here.

"avec's ambient nook" was another great rar thread. I miss that nook.

i hated message boards around the early-mid 2000's, and that's why i stayed away from here until i joined. shell shocked from years of dealing with AOL message boards in the late 90's-early 2000's. i was content with reading something awful and watching drama unfold between YTMND and Ebaums. the only message board i was a patron of during that time was howard stern's original Vagina Corner, which only lasted a few months before being taken down.

i'm pretty sure i would've hated this one too.

I think I posted on there like 8 times, less than 100 anyway, usually in threads like "name a song that begins and ends with the same words/phrase." I was told I have the coolest handle of all time there.

I posted on the SOMB when it was relatively new circa 2002 or 2003, but after checking out a lot of music that was popular there and unknown to me, I found that I despised the musical tastes of MANY core posters. One of the year-end "best of" threads convinced me that the board should be imploded immediately. I don't recall even glancing at the board after 2004 or 2005.

Also of note: Jim DeRogatis is a bad writer and an awful music critic. Greg Kot at least appears to have an IQ that mostly stands above room temperature.

Went digging through my library and found one of my favorite SOMB discoveries, kind of a Flaming Lips-y affair: Quinn Walker's "Save Your Love For Me"

I hate pressure, I hate responsibility
I always show up late and it takes me so long to leave
But if you're willing to accept my flaws
Save your love for me

Yeah I forgot about the jealousy
And how angry I get for only reasons I perceive
There's so much trouble brewing, meanwhile,
Save your love for me

I was a long time poster, and the forum admin for many years. AMA.

Highlights:
the genre-specific anthology mix series
The great rockism debate
Lonely end of the dance floor and metal threads
Meeting Neko Case at the 100th episode (on CPR) party
