I think years ago, they made a TV movie about his relationship with his sick daughter. I guess I'll google it. I didn't realize he was that old.

RIP

That didn't take long:

I feel like I'm the only person in the world that remembered that paper. That as a must-buy every day along with the Trib. I think I kept nearly every issu but due to circumstances they were tossed earlier this year.

I really liked The National. Good writing and layout.

Deford also wrote a pretty good baseball book (The Old Ballgame) which was about Christy Mathewson, John McGraw, and the deadball era.

If I ever was on the train coming out of the Loop back then, I had to pick up a copy of the National.

I also read The National. I can remember a time when Chicago had 4 dailies, different editions on the same day. Those were the days.

I read The National, though I preferred The Sporting News since I wasn't reading The National every day.

Good publication, though.

The national was great but I remember it being hard to get a hold of for me as I wasn't driving st the time. Was bummed when I found out it closed shop.
