I happen to really like Dave Grohl, but I had this exact same thought earlier today,
along the lines of 'Tom Petty was Dave Grohl when Dave Grohl was still in diapers........'.
What American kid who picked up a guitar in the early to mid 80's didn't wanna be Tom Petty?
He might still be clinically alive, but I think we know how this ends up.....

Tom Petty is a legend. With all due respect, anyone that says otherwise can promptly shut the fuck up. Unless you’re bringing the comedy, that is.

I generally agree, with a caveat. Dylan strived to be what he became, and so did Bruce. What did Petty strive to be? I don't think his goal in music (setting aside the sex, drugs and R&R mentality) was the same, and he did his thing better than most. The Grohl comparison is perfect. Petty achieved 'it', while Grohl flails around doing things loudly with a little more PR behind him.

Tom Petty is one of those cats I would love to have jammed with and had a beer or few...

Tom Petty should be happy he's not Bruce Springstein. If Tom Petty = Dave Grohl, then Scott Stapp = Bruce Springstein.

Eddie Vedder is a closer comparison to Springsteen in that they both have long careers with long tails and insanely devoted fans who bootleg and quibble over all their four-hour concerts.

I've been trying to get into Springsteen post-Born in the U.S.A. and I don't think it's gonna happen. Human Touch and Lucky Town are really really bad.

He was given some leeway at the time iirc. Coupla big hits. Coupla sappy songs. Coupla dumpster fires...it was the 80's, Reagan and all...He got a pass.

Nope, I don't know what that means but it summed things up just about right. You had to be there. Lot's of double popped alligator collars. Penny loafers. Not a good time. Not a good time at all.

Somewhere on this bored is a beni post attempting to work the title of all Petty hits into said post. It was a pathetic masterpiece. I tried running it down, but didn't get lucky. Connection Brokedown, so i Waited. I Needed to Know if Too Much Ain't Enough....you get the gist.

I enjoyed the body of work, and leaned on it at times. Later I heard from people that played with him he was a shit. Me thinks jealousy was involved. If this is the end it is safe to say, Lucky or no, he was no loser. Unfortunately, life did him like that. It happens to the best of them. Thank you for your efforts good man. RIP.

I think it's cool how almost everyone has a story about high school, Tom Petty music, and a car.

i don't think tom petty was "striving" to be anything more than just a songwriter. and while dave grohl loves the limelight, he's at least got a sense of humor about it.

I'm far from the Dylan expert here. A lot of people are with Cory with regards to liking Blood on the Tracks the best and it was one of
my favorites as well. Bootleg 5 is a great period of live performances that bleed into the Desire album which again is one of my favs.
Dylan will always be someone that gets people riled up, not a traditionally great singer but everything he did into the mid to late 70s
he still had his voice. After that things got progressively worse.

Petty was a very similar performer in a lot of ways. Very good songwriter with a voice that a lot of people would say was not traditional.
I never got into him enough to even buy an album but was pretty familiar with his musical catalog. Probably spend some time on YouTube
today listening. Rather than just pulling up a Greatest Hits album does anyone have a suggestion for best Tom Petty album? I prefer to
listen to full albums.

Yeah, Springsteen post Born in the USA is pretty awful. I also didn't like Nebraska. Born to Run is the gold standard, The River is really good, but a little long, Darkness on the Edge of Town is delightful, and I like the bloated jamming on The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle.

Post 85, the only thing he did that wasn't completely awful was Magic, and that wasn't very good. Meet Me in the City off of the River re-release was pretty good.

Conversely, I haven't liked much Tom Petty did after Wildflowers. To me, Damn the Torpedoes is his gold standard.

Oh well, RIP.
