Great. Now I have to chose between paying for internet to read emails, or paying for internet to read this board.

The government solving a problem that doesn't exist by creating much bigger problems!

I thought that was the Democrats job?

I do find the stance of Google, Twitter, et al on net neutrality somewhat amusing in light of the fact that they do not treat content on their sites neutrally. It must be the money!

Didn't someone who post here claim that the way the internet is setup right now that this will be hard to implement?

Yeah, and he was wrong.

The cable companies didn't spend millions on this because they couldn't do it.

Oh, it's really funny, fuckwit! 97.5% of Americans wanted to keep Net Neutrality but you and a handful of dumb fucking Trumpsters including 3/5 of the FCC support this bullshit. It's a fucking shame your mother didn't swallow instead. People are going to die because of this but keep laughing, shitlord. This is an attack on People of Color, LBGTIIQ2SCRTVOULMNOP, and worst of all Twitter. Should I say it again? PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE!

Yes, except for the ones that those currently in power enjoy...you know, amputees, shemales, kiddie stuff, chicks that pee on dudes faces, midgets, and beastiality.

It's bad for any website your ISP doesn't want you to visit for whatever reason (e.g., "too much" bandwidth, they have a similar website, etc.).

I mean, really (and this isn't directed at you JB), at this point if you don't understand what fuckery this is, you're purposefully ignorant and, imo, an asswipe to boot.

I for one believe that the free market will totally correct any potential negative consequences of this. Any ISP that tries to overcharge customers will be swiftly met by a stiff slap from the invisible hand.

The ironic part is that this could be the gateway to municipal broadband becoming big in the United States which is another thing that the cable companies have fought hard against.

I agree with that.

And anyway, "net neutrality" is a fiction to begin with. The big dogs get favored treatment from the ISPs. I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg and Sergey Brin want to keep it that way.

Are you suggesting that Google and Netflix don't receive special treatment from ISPs?

It theoretically could, but it likely isn't big enough except for the most greedy of internet service providers.

Yep, Comcast just unplugged bigfan's dedicated server. Expect more General Error messages.

Here's an article from 2014:

https://www.wired.com/2014/06/net_neutrality_missing/

"The only trouble is that, here in the year 2014, complaints about a fast-lane don’t make much sense. Today, privileged companies—including Google, Facebook, and Netflix—already benefit from what are essentially internet fast lanes, and this has been the case for years. Such web giants—and others—now have direct connections to big ISPs like Comcast and Verizon, and they run dedicated computer servers deep inside these ISPs. In technical lingo, these are known as “peering connections” and “content delivery servers,” and they’re a vital part of the way the internet works."

"Even Tim Wu, the man who coined the term net neutrality, will tell you that the fast lane idea isn’t what it seems. “The fast lane is not a literal truth,” he says. “But it’s a sense that you should have a fair shot.” On the modern internet, as Wu indicates, the real issue is that such a small number of internet service providers now control the pipes that reach out to U.S. consumers—and that number is getting even smaller, with Comcast looking to acquire Time Warner, one of its biggest rivals. The real issue is that the Comcasts and Verizons are becoming too big and too powerful. Because every web company has no choice but to go through these ISPs, the Comcasts and the Verizons may eventually have too much freedom to decide how much companies must pay for fast speeds."

If there's a problem, it's the monopoly held by a few very powerful ISPs.

Billion dollar companies do have advantages but that doesn't mean we should make it much worse or call net neutrality a myth. It's still vitally important.

As I mentioned, if we had municipal broadband, and maybe we will because of this, then it's a lot different than the system we have now which the government not only allows but has actually invested heavily with a poor return on public investment in terms of technology increases.

I can't see municipal broadband working out at all for the end user. Corruption, bureaucracy and lack of keeping up with technology would be the tip of the iceberg of concerns. They will somehow charge you more as well.
