Not my cup of tea at all, but I can respect their talents, longevity, and influence on music.

Quote:
Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson has announced that the Canadian prog rock giants are “basically done” and have no plans to do another album or tour.

Lifeson made the admission during an interview with The Globe And Mail, and he continued on to say: "It’s been a little over two years since Rush last toured. We have no plans to tour or record any more. We’re basically done. After 41 years, we felt it was enough."

Yeah, us huge fans have basically known about this for a couple of years, but no one ever made it "official". Got out close to the top of their game, and the best studio album they've done in at least 20 years.

My wife grew up musically sheltered (read: country music). She was introduced to Rush via The Goldberg's episode about them, which was mildly amusing. Summed up in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFlpw69prTQ

 That was awesome

Anyways, these guys made "2112" so they can do whatever they want.

I thought it was reported they were done a few years ago when Neil Peart announced he couldn't play the drums any longer due to severe tendonitis. Lifeson also suffers from arthritis.

Yeah this is really already known for a long time to fans. I will also add Neil no longer wants to be away from his young daughter like a tour would demand. For obvious reasons.

If you have Showtime "Rush time stands still" pretty much gives a good summery of what
went down and follows them on their last tour.
I'll admit I was a big fan back in the day but it was good look at the band. Shit they were showing
people that had been to over 100 shows, that's a whole lot of Rush

Wouldn't be surprised if this is just a formal notice that while Geddy and Alex may have plans to write/play stuff under the Lee/Lifeson moniker, it won't be under the Rush banner.

That is what I kinda got from the documentary, Peart was the one wanting to retire and those two
seemed pretty miffed about it. Also they were always interviewed together while Neil was in his
garage with a bunch of Corvettes.

Best Rush song is either "Subdivisions" or "Vital Signs"

Limelight is good. Red Barchetta isn't that good. Doesn't have that sweet ARP intro, that's for sure.

Peart is such a god-awful lyricist, especially most of the stuff he wrote later on in the band's career. I'm not a huge Rush fan, but I would certainly steer clear of most of the synth trash they released from 1980 and onward.

Favorite Songs:
Working Man
Limelight
2112
Fly By Night

I like Hemispheres a lot. Entre Nous has a soft place for me. Moving Pictures obviously. I definitely tailed off later on as far buying music. They still put on good shows to me anyway up till 2008 or so. I would have liked to see the last tour as they played all their stuff from end to beginning. Even bringing out the classic instruments as they did.

I'm not a huge Rush fan either, but what I do like is the synth trash. I might have my hockey fan card taken away.

Natural Science is their finest work.

Vital Signs is a really underrated tune.

Permanent Waves is my personal favorite. They routinely apologize for the post-Signals synth era (esp. Lifeson, understandably) and thank their fans for sticking with them through it. They really lost their way during that period. 2112 has to be their masterpiece, maybe the best prog album ever. But they have at least one really good song on every album up through Signals. Geddy Lee actually a solo album in the early 2000s. It's not very interesting, basically sounds like songs Rush rejected. Probably foretelling the whole LeeLifeson deal.

Listening to music for lyrics' sake is no way to go through life, son. Lyrics are, largely, to be ignored.

They have never "apologized" for their synth period - hell, the first SIX songs on the Clockwork Angels tour setlist were from that period.

and thank their fans for sticking with them through it. They really lost their way during that period. debatable

2112 has to be their masterpiece, maybe the best prog album ever Arguably not even top 3 of their catalogue. Best prog album ever? Not even close. Your opinion, though, but bad.

But they have at least one really good song on every album up through Signals. Should have stopped that sentence after the word "album"

The album, while not a standout, is not very Rush,-like, either; at that time, however, he didn't even know if Rush was going to reconvene after Neil's family tragedies. Oh, and BTW, Alex did a solo album at the time as well, likely for similar reasons.

Hmmm. I wasn't even trying to be controversial--that 2112 isn't in their top 3 is just silly. It's their definitive work. These responses seem to be shockingly ignorant of primary source materials re: the synth stuff. And Lee himself said the solo album was bad & that he wasn't comfortable playing w/o the other guys. It sounds exactly like the Rush albums that followed Neil's return, which were bad. I loved them when I was a kid but they peaked in the 70s and were never really relevant after Signals except to the hard-core

I agree with you on this one Danny. Rush was great in the 70s into the very early 80s. Clearly Minooka Meatball is also a Rush meatball. They are just a step below Springsteen fans in terms of misplaced worship. And I say this as a fan.
