even if you think you're not at fault and believe you'll win, it's still going to cost a metric fukton of legal fees to get to that result. Plantiffs lawyers often offer covered parties settlements within their coverage limits that the insurance company would rather pay to settle than pay to fight and potentially still lose, esp in a high profile case with a (presumably) sympathetic to a jury deceased.

this isn't a class action or potential class action where caving means you'll be settling 100's or 1000's of similar cases. it's a one-off difficult to wanna litigate case that if you can pay and get out for a number less than or even a number somewhat matching your potential legal bill to fight you'll take that offer.

if you're really, truly, no question not at fault, you can get out on a summary judgment motion to dismiss the suit against you. But when you're the driver/owner of the truck that did the killing, no way you're getting out on a summary judgment motion. No point even trying (unless you're committed to litigating the thing out to the end). All you'll do is spend legal fees and likely drive up the price of the settlement offer after you lose the summary judgment motion.
