Bob Chinn's Crabhouse Restaurant
Wheeling, IL

Today we lost a legend. It’s with an extremely heavy heart that we announce the passing of our fearless leader, our friend, our family member- the one and only, Bob Chinn. To know him was to love him and he was known by so many. His larger-than-life personality and famous tastebuds gave us 99 fantastic years of excitement, innovation and countless smiles. Everyone who has walked through the doors of his eponymous restaurant has been a part of this incredible journey and we’d like to thank you all. We will be celebrating his wonderful life- more details to follow in the coming days. In the interim, we’d love to hear all of your “Bob” stories- we know everybody has one! Photos are welcome too! Please send to: info@bobchinns.com. Thank you again for the love and support in making his life a truly spectacular one! #bobchinnscrabhouse #bobchinns #chicagosbesttv #chicagolegend

Bob Chinn, a longtime successful Wheeling restauranteur before struggling to keep up with nearby Boston Fish Market, died this morning from natural causes, per his eponymous restaurant's Facebook page. Chinn would have turned 100 years old on March 23.

...we’d love to hear all of your “Bob” stories...

I recall hearing MANY "Bob" stories. Mostly involving sexual harassment.

Used to play poker with one of his heirs…I suspect he is going to get a nice payout.

I saw Bob and his family several times at Yu’s in the Mecca.

I got the vibe that his restaurants were those suburban legends where people with neither taste nor wide eating experiences tell you it is the best food they have ever had.

His "Bob Chinn's 34th St. Fishery" on Ogden is now a Schmaltz Delicatessen.

Technically that wasn't Bob Chinns, it was a nephew (or something like that). It was pretty much the same menu though, albeit in a much smaller location.

The daily fish specials were flown in daily and were as fresh as you can get in the midwest. Not exactly like Applebees.

I always saw it as Red Lobster for non Black folks. But I will admit to enjoying their version of Oysters Rockefeller.

Is that the same as the short lived branch that was in the old Traffic court building?

Ok, I hadn't seen your post, but I was driving up to Chicago the last couple of days with one of my cousins and Bob's death came up. And I swear I said "Red Lobster for people who think they are too classy for Red Lobster now that they live in Northbrook or Wheeling."

People from Wheeling are not too classy for Red Lobster.
