I seriously thought/think kids i know listen to a lot of the music of their parents. I know that I did at least with my own mom and others in my family. I know my sons listen to a lot of the diverse stuff I listen to.
Sometimes, I wonder what happened to the world I live in. Every year, there are 500 new acts and a gazillion new poets, novels, and tv shows.
But fairly frequently, with music, kids surprise me. Either my own kids do ("Hey Dad, did you ever hear of Marvin Gay?" or "Do you have this famous album called . . . I think it's called
Ok Computer?") or kids at one of the schools I teach at. I'm always giving high fives for cool band t-shirts. My big thing is community,
gemeinschaft feeling, and while I am not calling for a return of mass-cult, I like it when we share references.
My own parents, no way. It was all the WJJD mix. My dad bought one new car in his life--in his fifties--and it was the cheapest car ever. He was the last man in America to buy a car with only an AM radio. I mean, he had no cash, but it also suited him, because that's where WJJD was. Totally angst-less. The Disney station for people born during the Depression.
