I almost went with a “send it in Jerome” and now I know that I never knew the difference between Raftery and Packer.

I tend to agree with you. Not that he's dead, but that he was the best. Al McGuire was pretty good too.

The golden age of announcers were when they acted like drunk neighbors that you would be worried about them punching you in the face if you were playing your car stereo too loudly and he was right up there with anyone in that category.

Yeah definitely 1 and 1A in my book. And to think they worked together once upon a time. Growing up and loving college basketball during the 80's I learned a lot from that guy. His personality rubbed people the wrong way but if you wanted to learn the game, he was definitely the goods. He could dissect a basketball game better than anyone that I have ever seen at the college level.

He was outstanding, no doubt, with one flaw. Everybody was always gassed.

IMO Al McGuire was far better and didn’t have the ACC bias

McGuire was a better entertainer and had more personality and swag, but he couldn't break a game down quite like Billy Packer. And one of the things that I always liked about Packer, (Unlike guys like Vitale) was that he never had a problem with questioning the moves and decisions of coaches. Even big name coaches that historically have functioned as deities in the college game.

I don't know about that, but it was more important for me to be entertained.

Plus Packer always seemed to be above it all. But he was a solid color guy, no doubt

Back then I fashioned myself as a bit of a hooper and it was more important for me to kind of learn the game as I watched it. Packer was able to do it for me in that regard. He did come off a tadbit sanctimonious at times though and above it all for some, but I always found him rather enjoyable. He (Like McGuire and even Vitale) Always had a ton of respect for the guys from Chicago when it came to basketball too. I guess that won me over also.

Packer was great in his heyday but those last few years were a bit straining.

Packer was the reason Mac told me the line about asking what time it was and Packer or someone telling how to build a watch.

I heard that line from Bobby Heenan about Nick Bockwinkel.

Every year after the tournament seedings were announced, he would tell you why the 9th team in the ACC should have been invited over the second team in any other conference.
