In 93 or 4 after the alleged kicking of his son incident (Might of been the accidental head butt a year later) he turned around at Welsh Ryan and called the student section a bunch of sick bastards or something to that effect. That's the closest I have to an interaction with him. We probably deserved it but god did those NU teams suck (Although that 94-95 team did make a rare NIT appearance with occasional loon, Ricky Byrdsong drawing up plays from the bench or stands).

A true legend. And IMO the greatest basketball mind to ever exist!

My favorite quote of all time. I have it hanging up in my office.

And my favorite youtube clip of all time

I am not here to fuck around this week. You maybe. But I am not!!

RIP Coach!

Nice clip! Never heard that.

My dad was a kid's coach, and a pretty sharp basketball guy, and he idolized Knight (and only partially because he played lots of white guys). We watched them twice a week during the season in the early 80s on the Indiana channel that we somehow got. Knight was the best. It was always an event to play Indiana. He and Lou Henson had some great verbal battles, but he was pretty nice to Lou when Lou retired.

Coached a lot of future coaches, too. Only downside is that he went to OSU.

They should have won it in 1993, too.

Yeah that 93 team was loaded. Injury to Henderson just killed them. Could have easily had a championship in 75 and in 93 to his resume.

And 92. Terrible Ted Valentine absolutely screwed IU in that Final Four game.

I will never forget when I was a kid and Jerry Sloan's son Brian played for IU. All Bobby Knight had him do was run into people setting screens all day and the shit worked to perfection. R.I.P. El Generale!

He invented multiple screening away from the ball. Sort of.

Most legendary half-time speech.

Here's a link to the Score live stream today with Boers chiming in on Knight during Bernstein's show. It's around -6:22.

Never knew Larry Bird was recruited by Knight and was on the team for a month before deciding to drop out.

Yep he was there for a little while and left to go home. Then ended up at Indiana State.

The story always goes that Knight ran him off. But that is not entirely true. I am sure Knight had a role and we all know he was not bending for anyone. But Bird has said that coming from such a small town that Bloomington was just not his style and hated it. Bird was not the type of person that was going to leave because of a hard ass coach only. Also, Knight has said that it is one of his regrets that he wished he had done more to try and get him to stay at IU.

The late 70s IU teams would have won another title if they had Bird. Goodness he almost single handily carried Indiana State to a title.

1975-1976-1977 National Champions (with Larry Bird). A third-year Bird would have done it all in '77.

It's hard to see how that would not happen.

After leaving, Bird worked on a garbage truck. Just an amazing trajectory. Boston was down, too, when they got him.

There were two times I saw Coach Knight at IU. The first was at a speech he gave at Assembly Hall. The place was packed. I remember being in awe of the speech. I don't think I've ever heard a better speaker in person. I saw one video where he was said to be the best teacher at IU, and that was teaching fishing!

The second time was at a home football game against Iowa. I saw him outside the stadium. He looked like a big bear in the distance.
