That's how Dave was. Very private.

Terry and him were buddies. It wouldn't surprise me if he found out today as well.

rip. i felt as though he was always sought after for baseball radio talk from the 80s (wgn sports sunday), later on tv/sportschannel and a revered guest on WSCR's early days. his was the last generation of team beat reporters from legit newspapers. today, newspapers have no budgets, the internet has destroyed print media and now WSCR fills baseball time by interviewing unknown podcasters for analytics talk.

i'd think any current newspaper baseball writer knows that in today's world - think twice before you criticize. newspapers are unable to attract talent.

It's really sad what's happened to the entire industry and much of it is self-inflicted. I read both Chicago papers everyday from the time I was 13 up until a few years ago where I just couldn't justify paying the inflated price for what amounted to a few pages of "news."

I remember when Dave Feldman was the racing columnist for the Sun-Times and I could tell when he transmitted his coulmn verbally and the guy on the other side got something wrong. Feldman himself was the only guy knowledgeable enough to correct the mistake so it went to print with the incorrect information.

Now there's incorrect information almost every time I read an article.

Forget that the current "journalists" seem to have almost no training in journalism and that journalistic standards have been obliterated, it seems as if there are no editors at all and if there are they have the skills and literacy of Julie DiCaro.

+1. In fact before the Daily News closed at times I would try to read all three; we subscribed to the Daily News and my dad would bring home discarded copies of the trib and sun times from the train.

I still get the digital edition of the tribune, only because it is so cheap; I think they charge me $7 twice a year. Every time I receive notice of a rate increase I call them up and tell them I am quitting unless they leave it where it is.

Copy editors were eliminated a while ago. I cannot believe the amount of factual mistakes, spelling errors and bad grammar involved in the journalism industry any more. Most articles are padded listsicles.

Its has to be a close relationship when you don't even know your buddy has been dead for 4 months.

yes, the craft and the industry, as a whole.

a few years ago, the chicago papers deemed front page material accusations of racism at marist h.s. - due to some students not wanting mexican music played at the prom.

today's decimated newspaper industry caters to those who don't buy newspapers, don't care about traditional news and may not even be able to read english.

in 1993, the trib's daily circulation was over 716,000. in 2023, it was barely over 73,000. fuck 'em.

Same here on the digital Tribune. I really only do it for Paul Sullivan, and most of what Rick Kogan writes.

What is strange is there is still a name to be made out there just trying to rip off Mike Royko. Nobody wants to write local stuff anymore, if it's not about Biden or Trump, it doesn't get any ink. There are a million of those to be had out there for consumption, I want to know about the 4th Ward alderman who blocked some old bag's driveway so a friend could pour a swimming pool.
