You know exactly what I am talking about. There were hundreds of millions of dollars raised for "social justice" last summer. Where did it go? What major societal change has occurred other than a massive uptick in violent crime?

This is the same type of vague giving. They are going to "eliminate a food desert". Some posters have disputed if a food desert even exists, but let's say that one does. Why does it?

Working on that is the solution to the problem.

And if that did happen, unless the same people are involved with this store, what does that have to do with this particular project?

I am sure there are well meaning people involved in some places of the social justice movement, but it's mostly been throwing money at something, enriching the organizers, and doing nothing to solve the problems. It's comparable to sending aid to a country controlled by warlords. People might mean well, but it is't helping because we don't understand the political situation on the ground.

I’m actually more confused now after reading the org’s website. It has this as a project started about a year ago and noted the org raised $500k from athletes to make it happen.

Cost of the liquor store, demolition and some start up money I would assume.

Site says the funds supported tear down and construction of the new food mart. I’m probably being too pedantic re: a website’s wording that’s designed to embellish a bit. I’m just always suspect of celebrity led charity orgs that exist to direct funds to other legitimate charity orgs.

My understanding is they had to first purchase the property. Then they have had a pop up produce market on the site.

Im just wondering what the Austin Harvest business model is. I get its a non-profit, but is it intending on running on donations indefinitely? Whats the shelf life on that after all the publicity wears off? Its one thing to run essentially a farmers market in the summer, theres no overhead. Its another to try to keep a brick and mortar solvent. To me its a bad sign that their first order of business was to build a building. To quote Back to School, 'why build when you can rent?'.

The economic illiteracy of Parkins is annoying. The number of liquor stores in the neighborhood has nothing to do with the viability of a produce store. This is simple supply and demand. The idea that 'if you build it they will come' has been the epitaph of a million retail start ups. I hope I'm wrong and I hope it works, but if they end up bleeding out once the donations dry up it wont surprise me. It just makes you wonder if there are more viable charities to support in the city.

Parkins and his fellow liberal co-hosts who attacked the Score's loyal listeners as the root of our nations problems now is shaming those same listeners to donate to a charity started by millionaires that doesn't disclose its financials on its website.

Black barbecues are a vegetable desert. You're more than welcome to bring a veggie tray if you'd like. And then also go home with it.

It’s not the athletes that are really running these organizations.
