Importantly, the four XFL games were the four most-watched sporting events of the entire weekend for viewers ages 18 to 49.

The XFL delivered some of the biggest audiences for sports programming on Feb. 8 and 9, with three of its four games outdrawing every NBA and college basketball telecast in the previous week. The numbers are a far cry from what the NFL brings in, but put the league on steady footing at the outset.

The four games — two on Fox, one on ABC and one on ESPN — averaged 3.12 million viewers and a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49. Those ratings are in line with the inaugural primetime game for the Alliance of American Football on CBS last year (3.25 million viewers, 0.9 in adults 18-49). Fox's Sunday-afternoon game had the biggest audience with 3.39 million viewers, while ESPN's Sunday telecast was the smallest of the four with just under 2.5 million viewers.

The Liberty Bowl was a college FOOTBALL bowl game.

No it wasn't.

I think it was a football game between the Navy and a Missouri college.

I like basketball, but it's just not basketball season. Football is more popular than basketball by miles, but pandemic ratings are useless.

That was never the argument though that has never stopped useful idiots like Fraternization Frank, JLN, and Ogie from claiming that it is. Its clearly stated in the title what the argument was about.

THere is little reason to place a higher priority on Off Season Football than there is In Season basketball. Basketball is the 2nd most popular sport in this country and the fastest growing among young people. McNeil's ignoring of it for years was silly.

Head to head. Nearly THREE times as many people watched Eagles 49ers than an NBA Finals game featuring the league's best player and an all time great.

Quote:
On NBC, its Football Night In America pregame show paved the way for the game between the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, which drew a 3.5 rating and 11.71 million viewers.

Meanwhile, ABC telecast of Game 3 of the NBA Finals (1.5, 4.08M)

According to Sports Media Watch, the mid-week game between the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers saw 1.78 million viewers tune in to ESPN. That’s up 103% from a comparable game between the Pistons and Nets last season. It’s also up a resounding 97% from a Pacers-Wizards game back in January of 2019. The good news for Adam Silver and the NBA doesn’t stop there.

Per, Sports Media Watch

“On TNT, Blazers-Rockets averaged 1.10 million and Warriors-Suns 1.20 million — up 22% and 50% respectively from last year’s comparable doubleheader (Warriors-Celtics: 904K; Jazz-Nuggets: 802K).”

Also, Sports Media Watch reports that Sunday’s NFL Pro Bowl Celebration — a two-hour special that aired in lieu of the canceled Pro Bowl — averaged a 1.2 rating and 1.84 million viewers across ABC, ESPN and Disney XD.

the 18 or so QB vacancies and speculation as to how that will shake out will DISTRACT the media from covering meaningful march NBA regular season games... and it's shameful.

A virtual Pro Bowl garnered higher ratings than at least two NBA on TNT telecasts. Not even an actual football game, but a bunch of interviews and stories and whatnot.

This entire thread is just laughable

Even "out of season college" moves better the the NBA.

The 2022 NBA Finals didn’t put up stellar TV ratings.

The Golden State Warriors beating the Boston Celtics in six games to win the title averaged 12.3 million viewers a game on ABC, the AP reports.

While that’s a 24% increase over the 2021 NBA Finals between the Bucks and Suns, according to the same report, it’s far from great for a major sporting event.

The last Super Bowl had more than 110 million viewers and the season four premiere of “Yellowstone” network had more than 14 million viewers.

Yes, the mid-Summer season four premiere of a scripted TV show crushed the crown jewel event of the NBA. For reference, the 2021 NFL Hall of Fame game-- a pre-season tilt between the Steelers and Cowboys on a Thursday in early August-- drew 7.31 million viewers.
