If music quality doesnt count, REM might win.

It's hard to top Michael Stipe as the most depressing front man of all time. What a miserable mope.

As far as that greatest American band thing....beach boys got that locked down.

What this argument illustrates is that America has never truly mastered the rock band as collaborative entity. You can't argue with our solo artists or x-and-the-ys, but most of the greatest partnerships in rock are British, sometimes Irish or Canadian. Call it our rugged individualism.

I suppose but there have been a number who've offed themselves over the years and Dave Gahn of Depechmode makes Stipe seem like Mr happy go lucky.

That is like saying that Jeff Samardzija is the greatest American Pitcher in history.

Not even in Robert Smith's or Morrissey's league.

The Dead are most definitely top 10 American bands, Allman bros, Metallica, CCR, Talking Heads, Beach Boys, The Doors, Beastie Boys, Tom Petty and Skynard in no particular order.

Forgot about Aerosmith and Skynyrd. Throw them in that mix.

U2 has a couple I can stand to some degree if I hear it once like every five years. I can listen to "I Will Follow" and "Angel of Harlem". That is all I can take.

Hotel California is the worst song ever recorded. I like some Eagles stuff. On The Border was a good tune on its own; the album not so much. DH solo was decent always loved "If Dirt Were Dollars" and "Sunset Grill".

Stairway isn't LZ's best tune but just because it's the most popular doesn't mean the rest of the catalogue is garbage.

Correct. "Hey Hey What Can I Do" was probably LZ best tune but they had to hide it because you could not say ball on AM radio in the early 70s unless you were talking about your red rubber ball. Love LZ. "Ten Years Gone " is a fave as well.

You can remove the Dead and add Van Halen.
