I don't know anyone who was born and raised in the Chicagoland area who has college football ranked as their favorite sport to watch. Further, I don't know anyone who was born and raised in a major urban area who would rank college football as their number one sport to watch. Conversely, I know people from East Lansing who are crazy into Michigan State and people from Champaign who are crazy into U of I. I think if you come from an area that has at least a few pro sports team you are going to be more into those teams and those leagues than you are into any college sport. College sports only tend to be top dog in markets where they have no local competition.

I think Fitz has become a bit full of himself and his program. I went to Illinois, but used to pull for NU except when they played the Illini. Fitz has denigrated the Illini, and the “Chicago’s Team” marketing campaign is off-putting. I don’t think alienating the tens of thousands of Illinois grads in Chicagoland was a smart move by the school or Fitz.

Separately, I enjoy the odd topics of the Mac and Parkins show. I find myself laughing while listening to the Score again which was lost during the Really Important Radio years. Parkins’ ignorance on bull fighting was hilarious.

You're a smart poster, and I enjoy your posts. (No, that is not sarcastic.) And I think what you say is generally true, but not totally true. Kentucky is a big college sports state, but it has several decent-sized cities. Oklahoma has two 500,000-ers. And then, of course, Ohio. Who's more popular: The Vols or the Titans? So I agree to a large extent.

There have been a spate of articles (Internet "articles") about this in the past twenty years as region has assumed more conscious significance to the types of people who write the articles.

College football is often a better game than the pro game, and for many reasons. But it doesn't surprise me that NU hasn't taken off, since Evanston is not centrally located and the football stadium isn't even on campus, not to mention that NU doesn't have the money to sell us the product on the airwaves day in and day out. College was still more popular than the pro game until tv came along. To quote one board wacko, "The NFL is just a tv show."

I wish the Illini had his success.

I also think NU blows so many damn early-season games with a strange consistency. I don't get it. Maybe that means he's a good coach who's getting the most out of his players while everyone else gets tired. I have no idea. But it is frustrating.

Tommy, your White Sox posts are the best, but I've got to disagree with you here. I'm sure there are some people who live in major urban areas who like college sports more than pro sports, I just think they're a tiny minority. Also, I'm sorry, but there isn't a metropolitan area in Kentucky or Oklahoma that is a major urban area. Also, while I'm sure OSU enjoys general popularity throughout the state, I would suspect that the Browns are bigger in Cleveland and either the Bengals or the Reds are bigger in Cincinnati. That being said, you might be onto something with the Vols and Titans.

I wish the Illini had their success as well. It’s sad. My point was that in the past I would pull for NU against other Big Ten foes. Now, I don’t mind seeing Fitz’ arrogant ass get beat. U of I and NU aren’t really rivals anyway, so trying to create the rivalry thru marketing and coach comments was a bad move. I was pulling for ND against NU. In ‘96, I was on the Purple bandwagon.

Fells is one of those Bernstein core audience members who has modest intelligence and believes listening to Bernstein makes him appear more intelligent to the outside world. Team Bernstein went on the attack on Mac a while ago and this core group followed suit.

I heard the interview. Yes, you raised those points, but that was not the point of my last post. Maybe it would be better to address it with Jim Phillips, but the interesting issue is why doesn't NU gain any traction in this town despite all the NU media fan boys and the money they spend being Chicago's Big 10 Team (when they clearly aren't even close to it)? That would be more interesting radio than blowing Fitzee (again).

like Tommy wrote, the Cats have an annoying habit of losing early season games in which they are heavy favorites which takes them out of any discussion until they start to get rolling late in the season

I don't know how true that is. The Cats have been the benefactors of a Big Ten West that pretty much sucks and has for a while.

Even in their best season under Barnett prior to the divisions they managed to avoid Michigan and Ohio State.

I was having this discussion with a friend the other day. I grew up in Evanston. I remember Michigan and Ohio State almost never came to Evanston. It was a big deal on the rare occasions they did.

My friend didn't think that sounded right. He thought it flipped every time they played. The Big Ten wasn't going to have those games played in front of 40,000 people when it could be 105,000. But I'm open to the idea I could be remembering wrong. Does anyone know for sure? Old timers?

They beat Michigan at Ann Arbor in 95 but avoided OSU. I remember vividly because it cost me all my hair on my head. Also managed to beat them the following year. But the OSU history is something.
