Mac really did seem to enjoy his time with Spiegel. I know I'm in the minority on this but I agree he should be a full time host.

He has a newborn at home.

That makes him smart to cut down any outside contact.

More so now that they had an infant fatality in Illinois today.

I've always been a fan of Spiegel as well. However, he's a pretty good fill-in guy. He's much better at it, and much less annoying than Rozner.

Some of you guys are getting tricked into thinking that somehow meatpants is going to be a good host of a show every day. That is not the case. He is in the perfect spot right now. He can do some baseball stuff on weekends and he can fill in from time to time. That is a good place for him and allows him to excel. If he were to go back to daily shows people would be ready to kill him in short order.

His show today was pretty brutal.

You don't think he's an improvement over Mulligan, Haugh, McKnight, or Holmes?

Not really. I would definitely take him with Bernsie over McDoink. But overall I think he is about in the same category as those guys. His act wears really thin when you hear him every day.

I am not getting tricked at all. The only show I listened to before Mac came back was Parkin and Spiegel. My pairings would be Parkins/Spiegel. Mac/Bernstein, and I wouldn't care about the rest. Bernstein needs someone like Mac, Rozner, or even Rosenbloom that will be the voice of reason on the show.

Meatpants is a perfect once a week third wheel. Dan LeBatard has used this model really well, both with Greg Cote of the Miami Herald and Stan Van Gundy when he was an ESPN employee. Both have enough insight and silliness to get through 3 hours a week, but not more

Spiegel has enough chops to also be the primary vacation host around the dial, the proverbial sixth man, plus host the baseball weekend morning stuff. More than that is too much.

I really enjoyed the Spiegel/Parkins matchup once they got their bearings. And frankly, I saw no reason for any of the shakeups. The Score has objectively gotten worse since. Holmes is like listening to paint dry and McConnor should not even be in the business of broadcasting.

Bernstein and Goff were losing and if that went on much longer it could have dragged the whole station down. Most changes have been bad but they had to put that fire out.

Then get rid of Bernstein. I only listened to him because of Terry and I only listened to him because of Goff.
Why is he untouchable? I mean, he's an excellent shill for the advertisers, but is that the reason?

I mean, kinda. By the end, I think Jason was openly antagonizing sponsors.

I don't think there is enough sports radio talk on here anymore for him to visit and chime in.

Mac replacing Goff was all that needed to be done. They could have given Holmes his current spot to quiet the racial talk of firing Goff. Granted, de Castro probably wanted to take Bernstein down a notch with the shakeup.

But if you fire Goff for torching the station's in-demo lead in afternoon drive, something had to happen to Bernstein as well, even if he had little to do with the direction and tone the show took on (and by Goff's hints, it seems like Bernstein was in from the beginning on Woke NBA Radio In Chicago). And let's not forget, this is the station that saddled Larry with Dan Hampton, then fired Larry off to radio purgatory when that show failed, so the station as whole could have come off looking mighty Not Okay if they twice had shows crash and burn in their timeslot but only ended up punishing the black co-host.

So short of firing Bernstein, arguably the most recognizable Score personality at the time, within 2 years of losing the most recognizable Score personality possibly of all time (a move that I could have been made to agree with, as it would set the tone for the rest of the on-air team), a demotion of Bernstein seemed like the best of limited options.

But then, what to do with Mac? Irrespective of whatever timeslot he'd be in (Mac did have misgivings about not being offered afternoon drive when contacted by The Score after the Mac n' Spiegs fizzle and his most recent return, IIRC), pairing a desperate McNeil with a guy who he presumably hates, a guy who we KNOW has legit heat with Mac, probably wouldn't have lasted very long.

The reality is that afternoon drive needed to be completely cleansed after Bernstein & Goff, and personally I think it's a shame we didn't get the return of Mac and Spiegs In Primetime as a result.

Blame McDoink for that. Otherwise Parkins could have gone with Bernstein, or Parkins could have gone solo and Holmes could have gone with Bernstein. But to bring McDoink back, they had to demote a white guy.

That said, Spiegs has taken it well, and there appears to be an honest attempt by management to make him whole in the long run. Plus this way they had a way of jettisoning Rozner.

Speaking of Rozner, it has been easy to avoid his columns. Without anything of note going on, his recent stuff hasn’t been worth a gander.

The sports section is nearing the end of its useful life anyway. They have Arkush clan doing football, ie no real beat writer anymore, and no Cubs beat writer. They have the Sox guy doing both baseball teams. Meanwhile, that Jim O’boring dude is still employed.

Yeah CH has had the angle on this from the beginning, but apparently Jimmy D had some irrational love for McDoink as an on-air talent?

If your partner was the white, jewish, north shore version of LTG you would try your hardest to only say things hed approve of as well.

"I don't drive a jalopy." (Was the first time I had heard the word jalopy in eons, so it stuck with me.)
