So said Danny Parkins on the drive home today. His evidence: the performance of Ja'Marr Chase over the potential performance of the tackle the Bengals were contemplating drafting and, "the way the game is played today." For a bad or mediocre team, I think he's totally wrong. Good receivers are wasted on bad teams, too much has to go right to get them the ball. On the other hand, bad teams can always use better line play. For a good team, however, he has a point.

You need an elite quarterback for the WR to mean more than the tackle. Without an elite quarterback, the tackle is ALWAYS more important.

Maybe the Bears should replicate what the Eagles did for Hurts, what the Bengals did for Burrows and what the Dolphins did for Tua. Why not draft a wide receiver from Fields school Ohio State, one that he has some chemistry and history with. How about Garett Wilson or Chris Olave?

Pace made that pretty much impossible.

OL first, DL second, QB third, WR fourth.

Good WR can be found late in the draft.

Why are you wasting time listening to Parkins thoughts on football?

Olave might fall to them in the 2nd round

Has he seen how Burrow has been playing on one leg because he got injured in week 17?

Did he see how Burrow was sacked 9 times vs the Titans in the Division Round?

Chase would have a much more difficult time smoking fools in the secondary if Brandon Allen was lobbing balls around the field.

Parkins has carried this torch for while now. I can't tell if he's trolling or really this stupid.
I'm going with the latter.

He lost me forever a few years back when Mac pointed out the Bears LT was coming off the ball high and playing with almost no leverage, Parkins response was silence because he knows absolutely nothing about the basic fundamentals of football which are painfully obvious to anyone watching the game, especially line play where you can see instantly that a guy is getting killed because he struggles with basic techniques.

If you have a good LT you can single block the oppositions best pass rusher which allows you to either double team elsewhere, or allows you to leak out your TE or RB because you don't need to give help elsewhere. It's a great advantage as you then have a simple numeric advantage over the D which a good QB instantly exploits.

Yup. A franchise anything without a good anything else gets you Joe Thomas.

I bet if you posed this question to Tom Brady, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, and Justin Herbert....they'd have the same answer of Tackle and wouldn't even hesitate with the answer.

Maybe up until the point you attach actual names to the choice.

When Parkins made the comment, Spiegel actually said he agreed with him if the team already had an exceptional quarterback. So, they both seemed to think that an exceptional quarterback would benefit more from the receiver than the tackle.

This is really a Sewell vs Chase debate, as of right now Chase is obliterating him. ( I thought Sewell was the right pick at the time)

I think it depends on who’s the franchise player and who’s filling the other spot.

The next quarterback that enjoys running for their life will be the first. Protect and provide time, they can make average receivers look really amazing.

This, even against the best cornerback in the league I could get open after 5-6 seconds.

The best receiver in the league can't get open in under a second.
