Those are both dangerous horses. I don't know about betting a maiden in the Derby, but I'd say Sonneteer has a better chance than most maidens would. The way he's closed in his last two- especially in the Ark Derby- has been eye-catching.

Gormley's a good dark horse. classic empire is coming in hot. this won't be a slam dunk like last year was, i feel.

I wouldn't be shocked if Gormley won the race. Prior to the Santa Anita Derby I thought he appeared as if he didn't really want to go a distance of ground despite his pedigree which definitely suggests a classic horse. I don't really like the way they lugged home in the Santa Anita. The pace was very quick, still, Gormley's 40 second plus final 3/8 doesn't thrill me. He's the only horse in the field from Turk Mare Family 23-b.

Here are some pedigree angles:

Raise A Native Sire Line:
Always Dreaming
Classic Empire
Lookin At Lee
Sonneteer
Hence
Irish War Cry
Battle of Midway

Buckpasser X Chromosome:
Gunnevera
Classic Empire
Hence
Patch
Irap
McCraken
Irish War Cry

Lathrop's Conduit Mares:
Battle Of Midway (Court Dress)
Fast And Accurate (Marchetta)
Practical Joke (Countess Wanda)

Female Families:
Gormley (23b)
Hence (4m) (Intrepid)
Classic Empire (4m) (Intrepid)
Thunder Snow (4k)
Fast And Accurate (1w)

These families produce an inordinate amount of Derby winners and classic distance horses:

I have a lot more patience for those people than I do for the scumbags that go every goddamn day and still have never learned any betting etiquette.

As a guy who grew up in the grandstand at Sportsman's Park, Arlington, and Hawthorne like I did I'm sure you'll agree with this. We had to learn how to call off our bets quickly and correctly or we'd have guys in line behind motherfucking us with a vengeance. You learned pretty quickly not to handicap at the window and not to put your elbows on the counter and settle in to slowly call off bets.

At my local OTBs, previously Lucky Magee's and now Players, there are a bunch of fucking assholes with total disregard for anyone else. Most of them are Assyrians but there is a Jamaican contingent that is just the worst. These guys stand in front of the machines and read the program. They bet dime supers and seem like they are selecting the numbers as they go. I've gotten in beefs with these goofs on several occasions. You know, I wouldn't do that to somebody else. It's especially bad now with a million tracks going. The race you want to bet is going to the gate and the guy in front of you is betting something at Mountaineer that isn't going to load for twenty minutes. Fuck those guys. I can see why people bet online but I really don't want a record of my play out there.

That shit pisses me off JORR, that's why I just do everything from the Hawthorne app.

My top 3 are Classic Empire, Always Dreaming, and Irish War Cry. Classic Empire won me a few $$ in the Ark Derby so I'm a little partial to him. When the PPs come out Wednesday eve I will have more thoughts then.

Got that right......I remember the $2 Combo windows no gimmick bets no simulcasting.Simulcast started as just real big stakes races on Saturdays.I had a teller at Sportsmans Richie Lord that I took care of if I ever was going to miss a bet I'd call it out to Richie and he'd get it in, I remember one night at Sportmans I was behind a dude who played 174 trifectas...must have been betting for the whole neighborhood.Like I said used to love it but have been soured by the etiquette

when i was at the Saddle Room there was a couple, looked to be in their 50's or so, hoarding a bunch of programs. You could tell they'd been there all day. When i asked how they were doing, the guy said, "Up $800." None of us believed that. But the thing that got me was that he was wearing thermoskin gloves. I wondered if that helped his handicapping. I guess if bowlers do it, why not...

I don't think the pace will be that stiff in here. Even if it is I think Paradise Woods can lay right behind it and move when she wants. If there is some crazy hot pace I'd look for Daddy's Lil Darling and/or Vexatious to pick up the pieces. I do think Abel Tasman is sitting on a big race and Baffert will have her cranked but the big horse just dusted her by 12 lengths and she wasn't extended in doing it. Lot of work to make that up.
