Post subject:  Pick Winners CFB, NFL Week 7

This weekly wagering contest will reward the best football prognosticator with a $100 gift certificate from a meat/steak company. New guys can still join in any time and you don't have to make a pick every week. You can post your plays any time, but they must be posted before a game you are playing kicks off. You must make your picks in this thread and you must provide at least one reason for each pick. Minimum 50 picks to qualify by the end of the contest.

Thanks for giving me credit for almost picking the MNF score, good dolphin.
(I had 31-14 with NYG giving 4 1/2 and the over @ 43 1/2, when the actual score was 31-10. Damn you Joey Blue Skies! The clipboard misses your warm embrace.)

I have to get my ass going here to get to 50 bets to qualify for the big prize...

Bucs +2.5 over the Lions. Lions will start to show their true colors which are black and blue. They will get hit with more injuries this week and lose.

Rams and Seahawks total at 39.5. I think it's hard that both these teams will get to 10-15 points each so I say under.

Colts and Jags meet on Monday night and the Jags haven't played anyone good at all this year. I take the Colts winning more than 3.5, even on the road.

Pats and Dolphins with a total point mark at 52? Pats might cover the 17.5 spread but the only way that game goes over is if the final is 53-0. I take the under.

I don't know college football but my alma mater the Central Michigan University Chippewas have been putting up points lately. I'm praying for them play well this week against Clemson and stay within the 16.5 points. I wouldn't put money on it though.

I wish I could bet on whether or not I will have a losing week.

South Florida -2 vs. Rutgers
I have to go on the side with the #2 team in the country only giving 2.

Penn State -7.5 vs. Indiana
Indiana has homecoming this week, but that is all they have going for them. I think Penn State is too physical.

Notre Dame +17 vs. USC
USC is not the same dominant team and Evan Sharply gives this team a pulse. There is no way that ND wins, but they can keep it close.

Ohio State -17 vs. Michigan State
Tressel knows how to keep them motivated. OSU hasn't won by less than 16 all season(and that was against Purdue who had a cheap late TD).

Purdue -7 vs. Iowa
Purdue bounces back and salvages the season. The passing offense returns.

USF -2 over Rutgers

Author:  newper [ Thu Oct 18, 2007 5:04 pm ]
Post subject:

USF/Rutgers Under 52.5(sportsbook.com) I think both teams will play each other tough tonight... Guessing USF will cover, but I think it will be a close 20-17 type game.

Also, since I need to get some picks under my belt, I will take TCU -3(5dimes) at home over Utah. TCU should be able to cover or at least push here.

-----

Sweet 0-2 yesterday...

I'm going Louisville -2.5(5dimes) on the road at Connecticut. Mostly because Kentucky is a better state in general than Connecticut. Kentucky has bourbon. Connecticut has imported tea.

I will also go with the Over 58.5 in N'Wstrn/EMchgn(5dimes) because that game should be touchdown city. They may score more times in one game than Benson does all year.

-----
Awesome... 0-4 so far!! Makes me feel good... time to break out the dart board and see what we end up with...

Alright... gonna pick 7 college games here in a hope to be 6-5 before the NFL games... those of you reading this might want to bet the exact opposite... you're likely to win.

Wisc/NIU Over 50(bodog) -- Wisconsin needs to put some points on the board to impress the voters. NIU is really outmatched here... they would be outmatched versus the top third 1-AA teams.

Missou -3.5(bodog) -- I love MO here, especially at home. They should beat down Texas Tech here... double digit victory.

ND +17.5(5dimes) -- USC is figuratively scared to death after their plane ride into Indiana. This will be a bad game by both sides, with points off of turnovers as the deciding factor.

Kentucky +7(bodog) -- Florida is living off of last years publicity while the Wildcats are on a roll. I like them at home to cover against Florida, and probably win outright.

Boise St/LA Tech Over 54(5dimes) -- Both these teams should be able to light it up on offense. Final score will be something like 44-42.

Michigan -1(5dimes) -- I love the Illini, I really do, but they are overmatched here. Michigan should be able to pull out a road win. That being said, I would love to lose this prediction.

LSU/Auburn Over 42 (sportsbook) -- Hells yeah, why not go over here? College football is so crazy this year, who knows what is going to happen! I like a few breakaway special team plays in this one... I think Auburn will probably cover in a 31-28 last second victory.

Pinnacle

South Florida -2 vs Rugers- I like this South Florida team and as long as they don't have big heads, should get this one, better defense than Rutgers.

A dolphin's not allowed to have a bad week? Do I have to preface all of my picks with "the following is for entertainment purposes only"?

Rutgers +2 against South Florida

Every fiber of my being says take south florida. However, I have always used the formula to take the home dog against a ranked opponent on national/weeknight games. This one seems to fall well into that formula. The stadium is sold out. Rutgers is playing to stay in contention. They have a legitimate shot at outrushing the Bulls (one of Coast's big keys for an upset is if the dog can outrush the opponent). I'll go with Rutgers.

Utah +3.5 at TCU

TCU has burned me much to often this year. They have not been covering at all (I believe only 1 cover).

Northwestern -10 against E. Michigan

Neutral field. Eastern Michigan with significant injuries on the offensive side. Cats rolling on their offensive side.

UConn +3 against Louisville

Home dog on a nationally televised weekday night (although not against a road opponent). This one is a purely formulaic play for me...and that formula seems to work well even though the picks appear to go against every rational belief.

A man who had mastered the art of self control would probably stop after a 4-0 start...I am not that man.

Miami of Ohio -5.5 at Temple

I don't give much to being on the road at temple. The best team in the conference versus the worst.

Iowa +7 against Purdue

I like what I have seen from Iowa over the last 6 quarters. Even against PSU they were battling to the end. The offense seems to have come around. Purdue is going into it's customary swoon.

From Sportsbook

Wisconsin +7 over Penn State
Badgers rebound while Paterno deals with distractions

Minnesota +5.5 over Chicago
I think the Bears win but it's closer than this

Arizona -4.5 over Carolina
Arizona is who I think they are (improving) while Carolina also is who I think they are (bad)

Dallas +5.5 over NE
Romo rebounds from his bad outing

Oakland +9.5 over San Diego
Big spread in divisional game might mean a trap (maybe for me!)

One more:

Hawaii at San Jose State: Under 70
Swiped this one from Sportsbook.com's Game of the Day. "Amazingly, over the past three seasons versus WAC opponents, San Jose State covered the OVER only one out of 17 times. On the road, Hawaii scores about 13 points fewer then they do at home. San Jose State's defense has played solid at home giving up an average of just 17 points. However, their offense only produces 17 points per game thus far. Given the data above, it is surprising that only 7% of the early bettors prefer the UNDER (70).)." I don't know why I am doing this - it seems like their Game of the Day picks are often wrong (cannot imagine why...)

Lines from Sportsbook.
And after a stinko week, I need to improve in all phases of the game. I need to get in my gaps while at the same time not try to do too much.

Buffalo +3 over Baltimore
Buffalo ok ATS while Baltimore is not

NE at MIA: Under 52
Brady and Moss don't run up the score on the feeble phins

NYG -9 over SF
Another West coast team has trouble in the Eastern Time Zone. Niners no match for the surging Giants.

DET -2 over Tampa
Lion shows up ready to play; more so than the buc

CIN -6 over NYJ
Cincy has their way against a team lousy against the spread

KC -3 over OAK
Chiefs suprise their division rival on the road

Bills +3 Jauron is a lousy game coach, but given the time of a bye week he'll figure out a way to keep the Bills in it, especially at home.

Bills / Ravens under 34.5 Trent Edwards vs. Kyle Boller. A festival of field goals

Pit -3.5 The Broncos just aren't that good.

Indy -3 Indy off a bye week. They're ready

Sea -8 The Ram meltdown continues

Tenn Volunteers pk vs. Alabama

Iowa +7 against a Purdue team that seems to be in disarray.

From WSEX

Northwestern -10 @ Eastern Michigan

Wildcats get back to back wins against teams from Michigan.

Cincinnati -9.5 @ Pitt

Wanny in the booth or sidelines, doesn't matter, Bearcats roll.

Purdue -7 vs Iowa

Iowa gets a big win last week, gets the let down this week.

Auburn +10.5 @ LSU

This game has been close the last few years. LSU should win, but take the points.

Notre Dame +17.5 vs USC

Notre Dame busts out the green jerseys, while it's not enough to win, it's enough to cover.

NFL

Arizona +8.5 @ Washington

Zona's Defense should be able to keep this one close, Washington having trouble closing out games too.

Philly -5 vs Chicago

Pains me to say it, but things don't go well for the Bears in Philly.

Minn +9.5 @ Dallas

Vikes hang around for a while to make it close.

I suck. I keep falling off the horse while trying to get back on. I'm due to win some games one of these weeks (from thegreek.com):

Northwestern -10 over Eastern Michigan
I'm taking Muds advice regarding EM's qb

Louisville -3 over Connecticut
This isn't basketball, it's football

Michigan +1 over Illinios
The Illini only win when I go against them. Iowa had some luck with the passing game last week so that should mean Michigan will have even more.

Notre Dame +17.5 against USC
Not calling for the win but that's a lot of points when you're backup quarterback is starting (for USC). I believe Sharpley gives ND the better chance.

Pittsburgh -3.5 over Denver
Pittsburgh is going to run, run, run and Denver is without Walker again.

Baltimore -3 over Buffalo
All Baltimore gets is field goals but they should be able to confuse and beat up Edwards.

Syracuse -3.5 vs Buffalo- Buffallo won't be good untill who knows, Syracuse can play some football and hopefully gets this one easily.

Indiana +7 vs Penn State- IU with a win is bowl eligible at home still playing for former coach Hoeppener and Penn State is still a team I can't trust.

Alabama +1 vs Tennesee- Alabama looks like a good team and Tennesee struggles on the road against the top teams, when Tenneseee returns in 2 years Bama will be really good, but I think Bama gets this one tomorrow.

Oklahoma +30 vs Iowa State- The Cyclones look bad and OU knows they have to make a statement for the BCS and a dark horse to still win the national title.

Texas TEch +3.5 vs Missouri- I like the REd Raiders here, playing well defense is starting to turn it around and Missouri coming off a loss.

Miami +4.5 vs FLorida State- Fan Pick, I have seen some less than stellar Miami teams come in and still beating FSU, hopefully tomorow is one of them, FSU still struggles on offense.

Author:  Hawkeye Vince [ Fri Oct 19, 2007 6:59 pm ]
Post subject:

Wake Forest -3 @ Navy
Wake Forest has a good run defense, giving up just around 100 a game on the ground. They won't be able to stop the run game, but slow it enough to win and inch closer to another bowl eligible season.

NC State @ East Carolina -6
NC State is hampered by two injured running backs and a injured QB and hasn't been able to do anything this year. ECU wants to win this one to say they are best in North Carolina after having beaten UNC a couple of weeks back and has a powerful offense to boast about.

Virginia @ Maryland -4
The lights will be on College Park as the surprising Cavs come to town. Virigina has eeked out a few wins by late game FGs. Maryland has played well enough this year to be 4-2 and should cover in this one.

Penn State -7 @ Indiana
Over the last two weeks, Penn State has put together two complete efforts while Indiana showed last week that they aren;t ready for the big time. Penn State rolls.

NIU at Wisconsin -23 and UNDER 49
Wisconsin gets healthy this week against the worst NIU team in the last 10-15 years. If NIU gets 10, I will be surprised even though Wisconsin's D is not that good.

Bowling Green @ Kent State UNDER 59
I think this 59 number is inflated. Neither team is an offensive juggernaut and while they have not shown much defensively, I expect a lower scoring game, especially if the winds we have here are similar to there.

Ball State -1 @ Western Michigan
Ball State has played well on the road this year and this will help travelling to Kalamazoo. Central Michigan burned them a few weeks ago, but your normal MAC team is not as good as this Cardinal club.

Nevada -7 @ Utah State
Nevada comes off a heartbreaking loss at Boise State where freshman QB Colin Kaepernick was discovered. He threw for 246 and 3 TDs and ran for 177 and 2 TDs in a 69-67 loss. Utah State is just bad.

San Jose State @ Fresno State -13.5
The Bulldogs have really turned it on in their last 3, winning by an average of 10 points while San Jose State has really struggled on the road this year.
