It was pretty funny listening to farmboy Dr. Ken attempt to explain the rural take on animals to his city girl wife. It was like Green Acres. No anthropomorphism for the good Doctor. He refers to poor Jingle as "it".

When I first got into the horse business I had to come to terms with some things. A guy I know, Eddie, owned a cheap filly and Dale Hiteman was driving her out of the paddock at Sportsman's Park before a race. Eddie was walking out with them and he leaned over to Hiteman and said, "Hey Dale, take it easy on her tonight, okay?" Hiteman turned to Eddie and said, "If you want a fucking pet, buy a parakeet."

Also, Tom Crouch, a guy who made his fortune in hogs and pork bellies and went on to own Kentuckiana Farms where I bought a lot of my horses, liked to say, "If you're going to own livestock, you'll eventually own deadstock."

I was just giving Dr Ken shit.

I am a huge dog lover, but have had to make tough decisions about putting pets down several times in the recent past. My wife and I got a dog right after we moved in together. It was a dalmatian that we treated like a baby. One day is was running down our deck stairs and yelped. The next morning we woke up to find that it was paralyzed from the waist down. We took it to the emergency dog center, and they gave us the bad news. When I said, well put her down, they looked at me like I was a crazy maniac who hated animals. I told them that my pregnant wife was not going to be carrying an 80 pound dog outside to go to the bathroom each day while I was at work.

They refused to put the dog down. I had to go to specialist in Buffalo Grove that told me there was a 25% chance the dog would walk again after surgery. He recommended we put her down. The dog was six years old at the time.

I'll have to listen back. Did I do that?

I think it was a boy. I barely go to know it.

When we went to the specialist, we worked with a technician. She had to call the doctor who was out of town. I don't recall his name. I only went there because I was intent on putting the dog down. I couldn't believe the emergency room wouldn't do it.

I had to squeeze the dog to get it to pee. It was 100% paralyzed from the middle of its back down. It couldn't wag its tail.

My Polish immigrant in-laws truly have no use for dogs in that sense. Dogs are for work, and if one dies, you buy another. They have an English lab that they keep in a very small fence outside and never let him in. It really is pretty cruel in months like this.

I'm sure it was Gendreau. He's kind of a well-known large animal specialist in Buffalo Grove. He works on dogs too. I know him from racing against him. He's had a few good horses. Back when I owned a bunch of horses there was an epidemic of a disease called EPM that was sweeping the Midwest. EPM attacks the horse's nervous system. It's like a horse doesn't know where he's putting his feet down. Gendreau had a fast ass horse named Oxford Fella that was having the type of gait issues that we associate with EPM. But it turns out he actually had a condition known as "the wobbles". Gendreau and his trainer John Butenschoen figured it out and got him going. He was never pretty to watch, but that motherfucker could fly in the straightaways. Sharp veterinarian, Dr. Claude Gendreau.

In honor of Jingle

Dashing through the snow
To a one lane country road
O'er the fields he goes
Running all the way
Balls and tail sting
Making paws frostbite
What fun it is to piss and shit
All through the fucking tonight

Oh, Jingle's balls, Jingle's balls
Tinkle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to piss and shit
To a one lane country road
Oh, Jingle's balls, Jingle's balls
Tinkle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to piss and shit
To a one lane country road

Five days or so ago
He was a kid's new toy
And soon Dr Ken
Was running by his side
The kid was lean and lank
Playboy seemed his lot
They got into a whiskey bottle
And then the dog got dropped

Oh, Jingle's balls, Jingle's balls
Tinkle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to piss and shit
To a one lane country road
Oh, Jingle's balls, Jingle's balls
Tinkle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to piss and shit

I just had to put my 11 year old Corgi to sleep a week ago and it still is killing me. My wife & I loved that dog so much. I talked about her often on here. I just adopted a shelter dog but that doesn't mean I don't miss my Corg.

I'm sorry, jimmy. I was just going to ask you about your Corgi. Just yesterday I saw a webpage called "Disapproving Corgis" and thought about you.

Jimmy, it's always tough. But the sooner you get a new dog, the better you will feel. Dogs truly are man's best friend, and my two provide me endless love and joy each day. My wife texts me pictures of them when I travel. Puts a smile on my face every time.

Yes,you are right. That is always how we have done it. The new dog we have is from Texas (kill shelter) brought to a rescue over in Illinois.

Well, thanks jimmy. And thanks for listening.

It takes about 24 oz. of courage or about 6 oz., depends on the mood.

My 2 (25 years ago)year old daughter stood up on our kitchen chair, fell back and crushed my mother-in-law's poodle which was old & blind. Blood everywhere.

Daughter was ok but had forgotten the incident until I told her about it years later.
