Didn't get a chance to get through the whole thing so there might be some unfortunate stuff in there.

Sorry Chus.

CFR 006 - 50 Touches of Grey

Chus rejoins us on short notice to discuss Dr. Ken's poor NFL Playoff analysis, the Grateful Dead, Phish, bad insurance, Porkins, and all kinds of other stuff.

PROGRAMMING NOTE - The podcast will be released on Tuesdays going forward. I'm serious.

You released this on MLK day. As BRick asked KW, why do you hate MLK?

J/K. My only regret is the light traffic day will mean I get home fast and not be able to listen to much of this.

Sorry for what? After we finished recording, you asked me if I wanted anything removed. As usual, I declined.

I think it is important to be honest and real. Some of the biggest criticisms of the local radio shows is how they make shit up as they go. That's not how I roll.

I enjoyed the first 30 minutes. But like last week, the sound was a bit off in my car. Did anyone else notice that? Last week I turned down the bass, but none of my adjustments worked this week.

Agreed. The bass is off.

I thought I had it. Research is necessary.

Chus and my mics were set the same.

Sorry. We will get it sorted out.

I was just afraid I left some coughs and off-hand conversations in there.

But I think I got them.

No worries. While great for you guys, it's pretty sad that I look forward to your podcast over any of the stale programming on the radio. I want a daily podcast....

And being real is a big part of the appeal so thanks for that.

I realized this response implies Chus wanted something edited. He did not. For the record.

The only edits were me stuttering over things I feel confident I know how to say.

About halfway through and it's sounding fine I think. Maybe my shitty broken ear buds mask any audio issues.

I definitely didn't read it that way.

Did. Not. Happen.

You're a pro. I don't think we had much dead air, or stuttering. There were definitely some rough spots in the first recording, mostly on my end, but things have been smoother since.

Is this a sex episode or are you talking about your hair going grey at an early age again?

well see, one MLK day a few years back Elmhurst Steve (aka "The Brand", not to be confused with the Aryan Nation, of course) showed up here and was insistent on spelling out "Martin Luther King Jr." as "Martin Luthor King Jr." -- you know, like Superman's arch-enemy Lex Luthor.

I pointed out his folly and Brandycakes claimed ignorance; he didn't know how to spell "Luther!" I went and took a screencap of the "Post a reply" form for the thread we were in because it literally said "Martin Luther King Jr." in big letters a couple inches up and 3-4 inches over to the left from the posting box, so you know I clapped my hands and thought "my work here is done!"

but then from that point on I started noticing that Elmhurst Steve was generally right about everything in general, so I started to question myself like "man, what if Elmhurst Steve is the only person here brave enough to speak truth at power?" and then I thought about it, if you subscribe to the basic allegory that Superman represents... [redacted]

If there's one thing I learned from Elmhurst Steve it's that you NEVER even consider saying anything about Jewish people [and/or their allegorically representative superheroes] that could even accidentally be misconstrued as being non-kosher; because at the end of the day don't you want to include "Jewish people" in with "White people" so you can say that "White people own/run most of the worldwide mass/media and international banking" aka "God's chosen people are White" ??

...and that's why every MLK day I take a little inspiration from Mississippi and celebrate how awesome Elmhurst Steve is. Seriously, if Elmhurst Steve was black he wouldn't be JUST... "one of the good ones" because that kind of pedantic sweeping generalization belies the honest-to-god truth of the situation: Elmhurst Steve is pretty much the one-man equivalent of "ten of the good ones" because, seriously, did you ever hear about how he hooked up his grandma with some kind of a super deal on painting her upstairs? Move over Jose Mourinho because I think we've found someone more deserving of the title "The Special One" =P

This man needs to be forever immortalized in bronze.... and hey a statue would be nice too!

so now you've done at least one XXL skypecall or basically ~2/+ podcasts with the guy so i think you'll be able to tell me something i've wondered about for years:

is "Chus" pronounced like "choose" or is it pronounced like "chuss" ? basically do you finish Chus off with -ooze or -us?

...and if anyone thinks that was a double entendre, well uhhh.... PM me for a link to my GRINDR profile!

I have no interest in music and couldn't name or identify a single Dead Song. And yet it was fascinating to hear Chus describe Phish and the Dead, and I totally see the attraction. It is in this episode where Chus becomes the star and relegates the good Dr to a mere interviewer role trying to get the main attraction to open up about his life. I'll enjoy the last slice on my commute home today.

Great work guys.

The child/vomit stories hit way too close to home. As I said to my wife to first time we had a stomach bug in the house:
"This wasn't in the brochure!"

Particularly close to home as 4 people in my house currently have the flu, including me.

So Dr. I've been to that insurance company's headquarters for an underwriting meeting. It is in a Georgia town called Columbus on the Alabama border. The building has a giant picture of the duck on top. We were told not to make jokes about the duck because they take it very seriously.

The styling inside the building was as old school as you could get and has the feel of an upper tier law firm. The rest of the town was run down.

After the meeting, I went to a local bar with a British guy who lived in Atlanta and an Irish guy from Bermuda. I am obviously from here. We show up at the bar in suits. We walk in, and the average guy was in a wife beater. Several of the guys had no top on. I looked around and wondered what they thought of three out of towners in business dress in the local dive. They left us alone.

One other odd fact is that the vast majority of that company's premium comes from Japan. Apparently only the Japanese and Americans are dumb enough to buy those low value supplemental policies.
